Re: Mega STE, explosive boot

It's not heat-related, I just tried to power it on again after one full day of no use and it crashed on boot.

I will start by cleaning contacts as Petari said, actually someone else gave me the exact same advice today.

Mega STE, explosive boot

I had a bad surprise when I booted up my Mega STE this evening... IMG_0966_small.jpg I tried to remove and replace the SIMMs and it booted, but an hour later it started to crash again. In addition a few weeks ago I plugged it on a broadcast-grade HD CRT monitor and noticed that the video signal was ...

Re: Wiki thoughts..

The fact the wiki has been down for several months worries me a lot. Data may be obsolete, but if it doesn't come back we can't fix it -_- There is a lot of information that may be better on a wiki (with refs to one or many post on different forums). I don't know if there's a way to backup it from t...

Re: HDD drivers. How does it work?

Thanks to you Petari I released a new version that seems to work flawlessly with HDDRIVER. I don't stop Timer C anymore :)

Better late than sorry

Well, actually, sorry anyway because I forgot to introduce myself. I'm a note-quite-old atarian sice I started in 1989 with an Atari STF that I sold to buy the then new Atari STE. Before that I started to code on Apple II in Basic in ~1983 (I was 7 then). I did a lot of never released stuff in the e...

Re: HDD drivers. How does it work?

Okay, I didn't know at all the ICD history, thanks :) I don't think the blitter uses the MSTE cache, there is no interest in that. To my knowledge only the 68000 can swith to 16Mhz, the blitter stays at 8Mhz. A 16Mhz blitter would be useless anyway. But there may be a mechanism where the blitter "wa...

Re: HDD drivers. How does it work?

A lot of interesting topics :) ICD: Well I didn't use any HDD on Atari until two/three years ago (I think) when I bought a MSTE with a Satandisk. Back in the 90s I couldn't afford an HDD so I didn't know at all how the drivers worked etc (I didn't even know there were drivers, I learnt that with Sat...

Re: HDD drivers. How does it work?

Thanks for the explanations. I was aware of the cluster issue, it's the same on FAT32 MS-DOS if I'm right. So indeed it's better to bound reads to at least 32kB, and the best should be 64kB. But easier said than done :) Now in the following case: clusters of 16k file of 20.1k If I do a FREAD, what t...

HDD drivers. How does it work?

Hi, While doing Bad Apple!! I did some research about the HDD/FDD DMA on ST because I wondered why my disk access were so slow. To be precise, I'm using an UltraSatan with Ppera's drivers (last version I think). The first version loaded frame sequentially from a file. Frames were of variable size, f...
