Re: 16BIT ROM CART THOUGHTS

I have been thinking about the diagnostic cart where larger ROM's are used with a switch to select which version of the ROM to run (IE, ST, STE, MSTE etc). What bugged me is it used 2 chips. Arne's cart doesn't use two chips? Or is that very long DIL EPROM the functional equivalent of two? http://a...

Re: Hissing and whistling in the STe audio output

Interesting. .aiff with a completely silent (except for the whining noise) attached, it's from the 7an song I mentioned above, captured from my STE. Looking at the spectrum analysis (done in Audacity) there's definitely something interesting happening here. The two obvious peaks are harmonics, the s...

Re: Hissing and whistling in the STe audio output

How high frequencies can you hear? That's one of the key differences between those who hear this easily and those who don't, I think. It's a constant high pitched whine in one channel, in my experience. I'd wager around 15.5 or slightly higher (I know ...). Actually I have a wav I could analyze, sin...

Re: Hissing and whistling in the STe audio output

Yeah this is something I remember from my original STE way back then, and I also have it on my main STE now (not the same ;)). My memory tells me it's the left channel, but ... I have exxos' dac-cleanup but haven't had time to test it ... edit: So, original PSU when new as well as on my modern picoP...

Re: NetBSD 7.1 on the Atari TT

How TT specific is all this?

I'm very interested in getting a modern unix onto my Falcon CT60e and the existing Debian m68k seems old and lacking from active maintaining.

Re: STFM C070789 6 CHIP TO 2 CHIP CONVERSION

Just to make it even more clear - if there's no chip at U68 you need to install a 74LS11 there - it's what combines the chip selects that were for six chips down to two. (I've seen more than one person buy a 2 chip replacement only to find out they have to order the 74LS11 as well once they've alrea...

Re: WD1772-0202 - overheats at 16MHz

I would assume the MSTE stays in 1.44 mode (16mhz) until you access a 720K floppy again.. I guess you could format a 1.44, swap to a 720k read the disk.. leave it for a hour.. then try a 1.44 again.. would assume it would work ok in that test. Yeah I had the same thinking, so I did, but it didn't :...

Re: WD1772-0202 - overheats at 16MHz

Oh well, busting myths ("all -0202 work!") is also creating new knowledge .. ;) Indeed. 0202 was later and more likely to work, in theory. But I've tested 100s over the years and its just pot luck. I class the vl as old tech, seen them in old BBC machines. Some of those work, and some 0202 don't. Y...

Re: WD1772-0202 - overheats at 16MHz

I don't know how the mste works with speed switching. Might be worth scoping it out ? AFAIK TOS sets (that's what the GAL does) the speed of the 1772 depending on whether it's able to access valid sector contents or not. Whether it leaves the chip in 16MHz until next (failed) sector read I don't kn...

WD1772-0202 - overheats at 16MHz

"Back then everyone knew that the WD1772-0202 could do 16MHz, thus 1.44MB" Yeah I've said that myself many times. So when I bought my Mega STE (TOS 2.05, 720KB drive, -001 PAL) and saw it had the -0202 I immediately set out to upgrade it with a proper GAL and Epson 340 drive. And verified it indeed...
