Re: IC deterioration

Things are that for some decades there is already general rule about 'consum' electronic - including home, office computers, TVs and like: There are more failures in first couple months than usual - what is caused by manufacturing errors. Then, about 10 years failure count is low. After 10 years it ...

Re: IC deterioration

Humidity (in air) is what harms chips with plastic case. No wonder that industry and military package is much better.
And I guess that there may be internal degradation too - nothing is 100% stable over time. Then, every power on or off is shock, what makes more harm than days of work.

Re: IC deterioration

"I just keep thinking the whole ST design is just a "house of cards"." - I don't agree with that. Atari ST is better quality than average micros from that era. In period 1987-1992 I made several upgrades, most by own design - like EPROM programmer for cartridge port, then TOS ROM upgrades (mostly wh...

Re: Write protect on floppy ?!

Never heard about this problem. I think that main reason is aging of machines. For me, another argument to get rid of floppies. This reminded me that Simbo was who talked about it at AF some 3 years ago. But I don't know, was he thinking about how to solve some things without floppy drive - like ins...

Re: Am I getting it right ?

Yes, that can be important factor too. I even explained it little at YT. Shortly: you need plenty of free time to do free SW. That would be part what is not so rare. But open source idea makes it more complicated: then need to spend extra time to make good sources, what some other can follow and doi...

Re: Am I getting it right ?

I think that they refuse to use Windows, at least big %-age of them. Same for DOS. Later is actually barely possible now. What made them to trying those crazy combinations with Mint and Aranym - later may be possible on Raspberry too, I guess that there is build for it too. Ah, and for sure there is...

Am I getting it right ?

I spotted in thread at AF some discussion about running DOSBOX on Aranym, and problems with it under Mint : http://atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=33630&start=25 They complain that it is slow. Sure, double emulation, or better said emulation in emulation, on not much fast system - what they exp...

Re: Strange TOS 1.04 Issue

Most likely EPROMs are not good (fast) enough for ST . Programmer reads them with much less speed.

Good place from which to order 27256 EPROMs ?

I see that it is still available, although here, in Hungary not really. Anyone can recommend good source ? OTP version is OK too. As I see, it goes straight into 6-chip, 28-pin sockets of STs. I certainly did it some 30 years ago, but was not sure now, so looked schematic. Better would be to go on 2...

Re: TOS105 ROM

... Charge a license fee? I.e, allow others to burn but they'll have to send money to you. Just distribute your changes as a binary patch and you''re even legally clear regarding copyright ... That way you'll have to spend less time burning EPROMs and visiting the post office yourself. (I could do ...
