If they are spinning all the time, the cable is in backwards ?
No, not backwards.

Exxos should the 920 work on any other machine? will it work in a TOS 1.0 or 1.2 ST? just as a 720k drive? If it should then I have managed to break the drive.

I cannot get the H5c1 to read any floppy drive now. I am not good with an oscilloscope yet, but I am understanding.. I just dont know where to start looking. Thanks

The 920 will work on a original STF if you plug the drive in upside down and move the drive id jumper on the drive.

ok, which you saw, I soldered the bridge on ID0 and plugged it in upside down.

I did not think anything could damage the drive with the settings on the H5.. if I tried to FORCE 720 mode on the 920 or something like that could I damage it??

I've never known a 920 drive to fail. I've used them for like 20 years and they've had a lot of abuse.

OK, found something that MIGHT have been causing an issue. I had a better condition CASE BOTTOM - that I switched to after the build. I tried to put the diagnostic cart in.. and it was hitting the case.. inspection found that the two locating posts on the case bottom did not line up with those holes on the H5 board. so the board was "cocked" in the case.. The previous case bottom one of the posts was broken.. so it did not effect it.

I am guessing the easiest thing is to cut the one post that is not lining up.. not oblong the hole in the pcb YIKES!

Not sure what posts you're referring to ? The holes all align up, but I have seen cases with slight variations in hole location in the past. I never looked into it, but might have been early STF cases.

Refering to the locating posts on the bottom of the case (plastic nubs) So.. I shaved the one down. All good.. now back to testing.. fingers crossed.

BTW if the 920 is slow on spin speed.. is there a pot on the controller to adjust? Did you ever do an article on that?

I doubt there is a pot. Its all regulated by the IC. Like I said, I never had a issue with a 920 failing. But I just don't bother trying to fix drives anymore. Once they start acting up, I just bin them . but that was always original drives. Early 920 drives I had issues with, that is documented on my site. But that is old info now. I don't know since descovering the pullup issues if the old drives would still fail or not. But I only buy later drives anyway so unlikely I will go back and repeat the tests , just don't have time.

Just a point that was not clear to me.

On my system for the 920 to work in 1.44 mode I have to have jumper 22 in 1-2 .. I got the idea that you COULD do 8mhz or 8/16 mode.. that the 16mhz mode was better but not required.

I was not able to get it to work in default 1772 mode 2-3 on j22.

So I now have the 920 working, and the B drive working.. I think I might be having trouble reading some disks on the 920 because of speed.

On the diagnostic cart with both drives working, I cannot do a speed test, I get TIMEOUT WAITING FOR INDEX. Both A and B drives, Sound right?

No 16mhz is 1.44MB only, 8mhz is 720K only, that is why you need the wire to detect when a HD or DD floppy is inserted to tell the 1772 what speed to run at. Or you use the jumper to "force" 720K or 1.44 mode.

I have never seen that.. but I haven't tried floppy test on a H5 on the diag-cart. Likely the cart will only work with 720K modes anyway.
