Legend has it that it's a completely normal DSP56001 - only in a QFP80 package. The cheapest option might be to bet on this, get a PGA88 version and create a converter board.

(note, this one is rated at 20MHz, just an example)

That ebay seller is Wizztronics. To bad to see them get out of Atari completely

If Steve from Wizztronics is in good mood, you can talk him into selling you an individual piece, he offered it to me a while ago, too.

As for BEST... you'd be surprised but he is not interested in shipping big packages - even if you say you don't care about postage costs.

Actually I think it's Motorola that offered weird packages Low pin count (88) was PGA thru hole. If you wanted SMT the package they offered was a 132 pin CQFP or PQFP. So it might simply be board space or pin spacing that was behind Atari's request. Those extra pins are just a lot of NC, GND and VCC ...

He won't do bulk orders as he seems to be worried about resellers. It's a little unreasonable but I do see his point when it comes to the flippers on eBay. He seems a nice enough guy but to say he's a tad neurotic would be an understatement.

My advice is to not push him.

I was flicking through the Rev.10 catalog and was going to make the purchase from Brad worthwhile by getting a few other bits, but it sounds like thats not a good idea.

I also tried tried Wizztronics a few days back. So far no reply.
