WANTED - MFM drive for Supra drive

Post by exxos »

Had issues with my supra drive couple years ago and its basically broke :( I did buy a load of MFM drives from USA which cost a fortune, but the supra controller doesn't play nice with them.

I found a larger drive Mitsumi MR535-U00 (physically twice as large as the supra but works but doesn't fit :( )

In anycase, anyone have a spare MFM drive for sale ? I am trying to find what model was in there before but sure I got some images *somewhere*

Took some images of the drive which was in before... someone might have dissected it...

Drive on the photo is Fuji Electronic FK309-26 and it was a 21MB drive.

I've been using different MFM drives in MEGAFILE 60, and only thing to be noticed is most MFM drives from PCs are set as ID=1, while MEGAFILE, and probably SUPRA too, will require ID=0. Very nice and easy to buy in working condition MFM drive is NEC D3142 (3,5" 40MB MFM drive). It actually works well with RLL encoding too.

Problem is space inside the case, so pretty much only that drive fits.. They cost to much to get drives for them, and they are not exactly reliable either. So will likely just bin the thing.

Hang on!!

Dont throw it yet!!

I have at least one if not a couple of old MFM/RLL drives that may be of some use to you.

Im currently having a clearout of most of my computer gear. (Pretty broad range of retro C=,Atari and PC cards and peripherals).

Im not sure if you remember, but I was going to make a list and send it to you Chris, to see if you needed anything in exchange for repairing my F030 at some point in the future. (However, after your recent posts, I feel bad about getting you to repair it!)

Anyhow, I will hopefully get to the box that has the HDD's in the next few days.

When you say the drive is the wrong size, (I cant tell from the pictures, sorry) is the drive a 5.25" or 3.5"? Half height, full or double? It would help if you could measure th height.

I dont think I still have a 5.25, but maybe one or 2 3.5's.

I don't have the drive anymore.. but I guess google images may help.. Its pretty small drive.. smallest MFM I have seen I think..

I did buy 5 MFM drives from the USA ages ago, costs a fortune in the drives and shipping :(I broke one trying to fix it, I think 2 didn't spin up, I think they ended up in the loft..

I can't remember about your 030 sorry.. probably 10,000+ emails ago somewhere, Its fine to do a trade, but after xmas is the only real free time I am likely to get when work goes quiet.. Normally work goes quiet when kids are off school, but work has doubled and I don't get why, I'm turning work away like mad this past month  Problem with my work is never any happy medium either anything, so very difficult to make plans of when I can actually do Atari stuff.

Hey, no worries!

Its going to be a while before I really need to use the falcon anyway. Having a new born baby has really slowed the small retro hobby output to basically nil. :x

Well, look. I will dig the drive up in the next few days, I will post a pic here and if you think it will work for you I will send it and you can test it out.

After that, if its good and working, then you can decide how many 'falcon repair credits' to allocate me for next year! :D

Oh, BTW, while Im taking photos and digging stuff out, is there anything else you are looking for?

(Ive got some fairly exotic parts (not all Atari mind) ranging from e.g. 3" Floppy drives, PCI SCSI adapters, ISA graphics cards, 30/72 pin SIMMs, 21"CRT's etc).

What is it with the baby boom lately here  I think lack of Atari time is the trouble here ;)

I'm not really looking out for anything in particular.. I have a load of pc bits here I need to get rid of as have no room :(

I found this in a box of parts that I photographed to sell earlier in the week, but I think its an early IDE.?

EDIT: Yep. Found a picture of it in an enclosure with an IDE lead hanging off! Never mind.

Ok. This is the drive I was looking for (sorry about the photo quality camera, as this camera from work is abysmal!)

The drive is a 3.5" Lexikon HD352 20MB ST-506/412 HDD. Its about twice the height of a regular 3.5 IDE drive (of the ~250Mb-4TB era).

Unfortunately, I cant find much info on it. But you are welcome to try it out... if it fits.
