I was lucky, only 1 did so far. trying to get my Pak68/3 working and well, I accidentally put a small tantalum in instead of a ceramic.

Not quite true. Needs the word "magic" inserting between 'black' and 'smoke.

It should read "Today I mostly learnt that Tantalum capacitors contain black magic smoke."

That reminds me of a nice xmas tail. Many years ago when I was working at Motorola designing firmware for Streamaster (STB SeTopBox) we got in a bunch of new boxes which were built in Nugalus Mexico. The techs were checking them out prior to delivery. The guy powered them up with the master switch and left the room. I was just outside the door working on some misc issue when I smelled something burning. Opened the door and in all most all the STB's there was a little flame in each box all in the same area of the box. Looked really nice all those little flames. Anyway after an investigation it was found all the tandulums on the main board near the power supply were put in backwards. I guess tantalums don't like that and most catch fire.

You didn't put it in the circuit the wrong way around did you?

The black bar end is the positive and not the negative as with every other type of capacitor. I think they changed that just make the smoke/flames escape.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.
