Idea for a "for sale store"

Post by exxos » Tue Sep 17, 2019 7:26 pm

We have the for sale section on the forum, but I think nobody really takes much notice of it. I have a few items Atari and PC which I won't list on places like evilbay etc anyway, as I am sure many others do.

I was thinking my web store does have a lot of hits each day, a lot more than the for sale section on the forum. So I was actually thinking along the lines of a format like my current store (Because I am lazy with coding and I want to create a new page  ) But a "public" version where people can freely upload images and descriptions of their retro hardware for sale.

The idea would be that if anyone wants to buy any particular items in that list, there would be a contact seller button, and this would just pop up a form which will submit the request from the potential buyer to the seller. This way the seller's email address is not public on the site.

I have not given the technicalities much thought about this. The first problem would be that anyone in the world could list items, while this would not actually be a problem as such, it would probably get abused by some idiots. So there would probably have to be some sort of the approval process.

This may only be useful for me, because I have lots of one-off Atari items etc which are not worth putting in my web store. So having some other outlet other than the forum would actually be beneficial to myself.

But I wonder if such a system would be of interest to others as well? We could easily have sections for Atari,Amiga,PC etc.

I have lots of computer stuff to sell and am not an Ebay fan but needs must.

Probably have 1 mega, 3 1md STFMs, 2 or 3 4mb STes, trs80, spectrums etc etc. And that's without the parts.

So go for it..... AtariBay?

+2, +3 and two original 48K.

Need to make sure they still work as it's been a while since they were powered up last.

Sounds like a cool idea :)

How about having the post-item-function being integrated in the forum, maybe as a plugin? You could then take advantage of the forums authentication, or even couple it to certain user rights.

I am half thinking towards re-using forum accounts. Basically to stop "the world" from uploading viagra and other "services" and godknows what else. Though developing a plugin would need a lot of time, which I don't have...and I don't have a clue how to develop plugins either.

What I would probably do is just access the online list directly, see whos online and whos allowed to post. Its a bit somewhat hacky, but it will give the feature of only allowing forum members to uploading items for sale, which all it really needs anyway.

The only thing a bit rubbish , is people who want to sell stuff would be forced to register here.. but I guess its not like huge amounts of people would use the thing anyway.

Or just let anyone upload (subject to review) and give people a password to allow them to upload more items automatically, and delete items themselves. That would probably be easier to setup overall.

I think, at least re-using the forums login data is a good idea. You'd have at least a little control over who is posting what this way. Having basic moderating options (i.e. activate after review) is not bad idea either.

And of course there is legal stuff: It should be VERY clear, that these listed items are not part of your shop and that you do not take any responsibility for them. My guess is, that these items have to visually look separate to your shop.
