Tape could replace hard drives - in some cases - thanks to this breakthrough...

I predict that it will fail, like the Betamax, the Sony mini disks of the 90s that music was sold on and Hybrid SSDs.

Yep. Tape system like LTO have always been cheaper than drives. This is really for archiving as direct random access is not really usable even if you "raid" them.
But for enterprise, on a cost per GB, Tape is very cost effective as a backup medium and with LTO-9 coming the restore time are similar to some drive system.
Working ones : MegaSTE (68020) / TT030 / Falcon with AB040 & Eclipse / 1040STF
Need testing : Falcon with CT2

Have always loved tape backup.. always gave me peace of mind knowing i could retrieve work down to the day. Any company that has to backup a large surface will be using tapes as you show. I can't imagine what it would cost using hard disks not to mention the power required and maintaining a farm of disks for backup. Unless some new technology evolves I don't see tapes going away for serious backups.

Love this. I'm trying to get my Tascam Portastudio 424 MK III repaired. On the tracks that worked it sounded indistinguishable from the source being driven by my Atari. So I have a soft spot for tape.
Atari 520 STFM (C070523-001 REV.D1) 4MB, TOS 1.04 (now using EmuTos), Ultrasatan with 14x 511MB gemdos drives, Original Floppy Drive.

Looks physically like a Zip disk :p
I always found VHS backup systems weird and in there day very cost effective, VHS tapes last a long time if stored properly.

I worked at a data entry place years ago and they had these huge tape wheel things like out of some 70s sci-fi movie, rooms full of them and a bank was paying to store them but never used them or thought "you know we really should put all that on a hard drive or 2"

They also had a 40Mb hard drive the size of a small family car it that room, one day the building got hit by lightning, £2000 odd later the drive was repaired, this was in the early 2000s...

I used to do tape backups for the BBS where I used to work.. Used to take hours  then when I actually wanted to restore the computer because it messed up, one of the tapes was corrupted was just made everything worse. Apparently according to the store's office, they knew about this problem, never told anyone, and they just used a brand-new set of tapes every day for backups. I just nagged I.T. for a second hard drive, only needed to be a 10GB job.. Never had a problem with that and backups and used to take a few minutes then.

Well it’s about time, finally I’ll be able to replace my reel-to-reel system :D

Seriously though, to hell with enterprise and large businesses, I’d be all over this like a rash, if I can afford it. I’ve got 70 odd TB of storage hooked into my home server and it’s not cheap having to constantly expand and replace old drives. Maybe if I hadn’t been archiving everything for the past 30 years, but I have and I don’t see me stopping any time soon.
