Who designed the Atari chipsets ?

Post by exxos » Sun Oct 15, 2017 11:04 pm

Question might have been asked/answered before. Though who designed/worked on the ST chipsets, and are they still around, anyone tried to contact them ?

Well, at my best knowledge, main designer of logic was Shiraz Shivji . I remember photos in magazines from those times. Something like this:
https://www.google.hu/search?q=atari+sh ... d1JoimaZM:
D. Renn would be who implemented that logic in chips self. At least I see it like that. Still, harder and more important part is to design logic self, and of course concept of whole computer.
Today it hardly goes with such multiple (should be of course some 74xxx logic chips) boards, things are much more complicated.
There is 2 kind of people: one thinking about moving to Mars after here becomes too bad, the others thinking about how to keep this planet habitable.

I wonder if Shiraz Shivji can be contacted... I just saw D.Renn in the schematics.. but possible like you say, he just converted the designs.

I never got a reply from D.Renn.... :(

Getting some reply from some more-less famous old developer is like winning on lottery. That will be really hard. I'm even not sure that Shiraz Shivji is still alive. I guess that they barely remember details (for what we are very interested) of those 30++ year old projects. Then, there are some contracts about keeping company secrets. Yes, they have no sense now, with this old designs, but contracts are for sure still on. So, it may be not comfortable for them. Not to mention that they may work now on some larger projects, so no time for our hobby support.
I tried to contact some SW developers, and actually, I got reply only once, from some less known UK programmer, so not some big name.

Shiraz is certainly alive as he made a greeting to one of the Silly Venture's video openings. You can find it on YouTube.

I tried contacting Shiraz via linkedin.. no reply for some weeks... Either people never bother with the place or never interested in replying.
