I was assuming from the photo that the holes were blocked with corrosion, hence the needle solution, as it is very controllable way to pick crud out of small holes and a method I've used before.

Is that not the case or is it just to hard? I'd have thought milling would be pretty difficult to do.

Would it be possible to use something to soften the crud?

Have you tried using lots of liquid flux and hot air? Maybe the region is a heat sink and an iron is not enough.

For example, the largest cap on the small ST is impossible to replace with my desoldering gun at max temp or my TS100 at max temp. It was completely blocked with normal solder. I had to use hot air to simply remove and replace the cap.

A lot of flux do not help. The black stuff in the hole is like cement, very hard.

I don't envy you with that task Frank but do look forward to hearing how you fix it.

Perhaps it's iron oxide from a rusty case?

I've got a Dremel drill press, if it was me I think I'd try it on one of the "less critical" holes and see how it goes? I'd certainly not try it free hand.

Heh! Forgot you were still on this Frank.

Are you winning then?

I use 0,6, 0,8 and 0,9mm milling cutter. I do use them manually. There come out brown stuff.
