It's quite interesting to run certain Amiga and ST games side by side and see how the programmers made changes to the game to accommodate the lack of custom hardware in the ST compared to the Amiga.

When done well on games like Turrican 2 and Blood Money, both versions are very good in their own right. By reducing the scrolling area slightly, reducing the sprite numbers and various other cool tricks, the ST keeps up with the Amiga in all but sound. Personally I prefer the chip tunes anyway as they remind me more of playing games as a kid :)

I never had any issues with chip tunes, is just part of retro computing to me. Never minded back in the day either. There are of course those sound samples and music snippets are totally awesome as well as the time.

Hi all

Thought I'd reintroduce myself by saying hi again on my original introductory message from a couple of years ago.

I've had a bit of a retro hiatus (life got in the way), but am keen to get back into things in the coming weeks. So far, I've got the ST, Amiga 500 and a couple of Spectrums repaired and restored.

Since then, it appears that prices have jumped yet again, and finding any broken kit to repair is getting harder.

With that in mind, is anyone aware of anywhere I could potentially get an 800xl or Amiga A600 in need of some TLC for not much money or maybe in exchange for a working 48k spectrum or a working Amiga 500 with a gotek conversion? I'm trying to rebuild my collection of machines I owned and never did have an Amiga 500 or 48k spectrum originally. The 800xl was my first computer and I'd love to get one again...

Hope all is well and great to see the forum here still going strong!
Pete

Hi Pete,

I've got a few 800XLs. I'll have a look over the weekend if I feel up to it.

@PeteW ok so I've got three 800XLs. I have one that works but just needs a retrobrite and another I've not had time to check. The last one is a 1mg ram etc etc but I'm likely keeping that.

What were you looking for Pete? I need to dig them out and test them just to make sure though.

@PhilC I think what I was basically looking for was a machine that maybe needed some cosmetic and electronic repairs. I'm assuming there are ways to get software loaded via SD card, so I'm less bothered about a cassette deck, though my original setup had the matching chunky cassette player that was pretty cool.

So if you have one that is a bit of a junker, but that I can put some time and effort into bringing back, that would be great ;)

Thanks again for looking!
