Haha I know it would be smarter, but I don't feel like giving up just yet!
I'm going to get a diagnostics cartridge anyways, would that also see if there's a problem with the shifter?

If the shifter is part alive then you can do colour tests, but I suspect your missing the 16Mhz output, in which case the system wont even try to boot the cartridge. other than try a different shifter, or indeed MMU,GLUE etc, you can't do much without a scope. It may just be cheaper to get a new motherboard.

Can't try with my other Atari's shifter because it's not socketed, and I think it's best if i don't get that one involved :p
Was planning on upgrading both of them to have 2 4mb Atari's in the end anyways, one for the music studio and one for the gaming room, so I think i'm just gonna buy another one.
I see Atari ST's are still relatively cheap second hand, over here at least (finding one for 50€ - 100€ should be possible)
Unless I broke the shifter adapter, my problems are already solved if I install the mod on the new one i'm gonna get (with all the knowledge I have now, and 1000x more care and thorough testing with multimeter), but it feels sad declaring this one dead for good, just because finding a new one is cheaper.
I really wanna get this machine running again!

Anyways, there's not much I can do for now, so I'm gonna start looking for a new Atari :P
Thanks a lot for the help guys, this seems like a really nice community!
Think i'm gonna learn a lot browsing this forum!

Another question, how likely is it that my problem is a dead shifter chip, probably due to bad soldering on the shifter adapter?
I see you can find those online for 20€, so that would be an easy fix...

It is purely guesswork that it is a dead shifter as you are unable to measure anything.. As it is a guess, it may well be wrong.

Aha...
New Atari it is :p
I wanna test if the shifter is dead by trying the shifter of the new one I'm getting
I can't break the new shifter when doing that, right?
Also, if it actually turns out to be a dead shifter, do you think I could trust this?

It's the only place online that seems to be selling them

@Globox im not sure i would order Atari stuff from China. Exxos has them in his store but obviously Aliexpress is cheaper.

Quite often they will cancel your order and refund you saying the quality is bad. I had this when I saw blitters for sale on there.
