Feking magnetic beds :cussing:

Now printing 166mm/sec 800accel.

I have been looking at fast and stop switches for days. Opto devices seem incredibly slow along with hall effect switches :( think in this day and age we would have optocoupler is running at nanosecond levels not in the 10 µs range  You can get integrated optocoupler is which run in the nanosecond range but not actual "slotted" optos. Ironically the hall effect ones are just as slow.

I was really looking for something which would react fast turning on and turning off. I thought a Opto would do the job with it being a light sensor, but they are just incredibly slow.

There is too much play leave the switches for them to be any use at all. So the only solution I can currently see, is using a tactile switch with a long pole on top.

Idea being that to solder onto a PCB which would vertically bolt into the extrusion frame. Right Angle with the longer pole for obvious reasons.

More printer drama. I now what why those z axis sync belts are used. I think on power down and up the motors don't engage at the same location as they powered down in. They can drop down one side more than the other. Turns out the right side had drifted by 2mm!!

So yeah, dual z axis is a dumb idea it seems. I unplugged the motor and unbolted the drive wheel so the x axis is only driven from the left now. It seems pretty stable thankfully. Very little drop overall. So I just tweaked the bed again to even it all out.

Printing ABS is nearon impossible on these open frame printers. Got some PTEG stuff to try, but doesn't seem to like sticking to the bed much.. But we shall see... Got some HIPS to try out more as well yet.

Cutting off the whole cables and soldering on new connectors.

Trying to do a half decent bodge job

Isn't this typical !!

If the power supply was just a few more millimetres away.....

So currently on soldering the connectors and soldering wires directly on the PCB. Which is fun being leadfree and they have not got thermals on the pads either

Next to do a system check to see what those "left over wires" are for

The flashforge saga continues..

Going back to the original problem of its not gripping the filament.. This was basically why..

IMG_7128.JPG
IMG_7128.JPG (333.8 KiB) Viewed 2138 times

The idler wheel on the left could not physically get close enough to the drive gear to grip the filament.

IMG_7130.JPG
IMG_7130.JPG (318.4 KiB) Viewed 2138 times

The new wheel which I had to get from China as part of something else is a lot shallower and also has teeth for better grip.

Because I am not using the original motor, it seems using original mechanism make it that the motor shaft is too long now

Anyway soon resolved..

Next is to file down the melted plastic for the Z-motor..

IMG_7134.JPG
IMG_7134.JPG (255.82 KiB) Viewed 2138 times

Because the mounting holes were larger than before, I superglued some washes on. It will also help separate the motor from the plastic a little.

So now doing some test square prints. So far the results are looking really good! Will post some images later.

Posting on the smoothie board forum is not really getting anywhere either.

https://forum.makerforums.info/t/m907-d ... rent/83991

The guy is basically saying I should not be using the M907 command settings are in the config file. Fair enough. But I purchased this board because it was basically labelled as " a hackers dream". In which case, not being able to send commands to set stuff is somewhat of a contradiction. Sending the command does solve the problem with the motor burning. But I'm having to set it at "0.03" we should really be 30mA which is unlikely anywhere near enough to power a stepper motor. Really wish I had the time to design my own board!

Considering the flash forge board was basically "proprietary" firmware and not been exactly compatible with Marlin. Then going to the smoothie board which runs its own firmware which is not seem compatible with Marlin either. I think trying to go with any "custom" boards like this is just asking for trouble. I assume that the Duo are boards are fully Marlin compatible out of the box. They are of course a lot more expensive which I guess is why the " third parties" are creating cheaper custom boards which again is great in theory. But when they are deviating from basically mainstream and established stuff... :headbang:

Another problem with this smoothieboard is it does not return settings via commands like the Marlin firmware did before. I can set a lot of stuff like commands, but reading the values back by another command often does not work. It seems you can flash Marlin firmware into it but it does not seem to be the "done thing". But again I just do not have time to start messing around with firmware again.

Anyway, back to the plot.. Next up I need to refit the cooling fan on the flash forge.. Then I may try printing out a benchy

I've always seen people on YouTube and lots of other hobbyists using 3D printers, even for heavy use selling product cases etc over the net, never ever heard of anyone have as much trouble as you when it comes to these things.
