When SGIs come to play

Post by rubber_jonnie »

This is my SGI Octane, which I'll be getting set up as soon as I can find my Octane 13W3-VGA adapter!!

I'll pull it apart and get some pics of the weird and wonderful insides sometime soon:

For now here's a selfie :)

I once raytraced a simulated cosmic microwave background around a simulated galactic cluster to see if the change in polarisation of photons was worth trying to detect on one of them.

The answer was no.

Carry on. :-)

You can use the 3D file manager and pretend that you're in Jurassic Park.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Well, you can pretend that you're seeing it too. ;-)

Looks like we have a small following of SGI fans here on exxos forum :) Me and @trixster both have Octanes too :) You should join the community at https://sgi.sh as they're developing current software stacks for Irix, it's awesome! :)

Btw... I think it is kind of cool that you can mount your Atari drive via NFS from Irix to FreeMint, and vice versa ;)

Hmm, interesting, another forum for me to join :)

I actually have 2, but one isn't working and is a bit beat up. I'll have to get the HINV as I can't recall what it has, other than all SIMM sockets are full and it has 2 CPUs.

Cool - I guess it works enough to get to the PROM if you can do a hinv? Might just need to pull/reseat the CPU tray and graphics tray. Sometimes those compression connectors just need some movement.

The one pictured boots, the other just doesn't, but the PSU works in the other machine, but I need to test the other trays once I can find my 13W3-VGA adapter. I seem to recall they work, so it is something off in the chassis like the Xbow I could be in trouble. Of course it could just be the power switch :)
