Re: STFM case remake

I have been reading this thread with interest. I know this is talking about the ST case but I have harboured a desire to remake the Mega STE / Atari TT case and have been looking around at options as mentioned throughout this thread.

I was looking to start small as the part I really want to start with is the HDD lid as the mould would be smallish.

Whilst looking around at the options in this thread and on the tinterweb I came across this https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.instru ... _page=true where they were able to admittedly recreate a small fish using epoxy as part of the moulding process.

Unfortunately the mould blocks available are not as big as the HDD lid size but it might be a possible avenue.

A slight off topic, did anyone way back think it was a good idea to make some kind of backing plate adaptor for a ST board and stuff it in a large PC ATX case? I would think someone would try something like that in the 90's.

Sure I seen kits for other computers like that. If not maybe I found a something to do

There are companies who can make a silicon cast from a original case and that can be used.. but would need a supply of cases as they get broken when the cast is removed.. and only good for about 10-20 copies.. still talking a lot of money and would still end up being like £300+ a case easily :(

It has been suggested before.. But the Atari MB is to long for most PC cases.. if someone re-designed the ST into ATX form factor then that is a better idea. Would only need to 3D print the back plates.

So if I do design my "Super ST" likely it will get remade into ATX form factor.. then not so much a problem for upgrades/space etc and cases are not a problem. Though its not a "ST" style case anymore..

The MEGA ST cases are smaller, so cheaper for 3D printing, that could be more realistic to do.. but really, why bother, just design a new ATX board and use a off-the-shelf PC desktop case instead..

Someone else in the world near india for example could get stuff done cheaper as its local to them.. but for UK.. prices are way to expensive.. Even going to China for stuff while cheaper is still expensive.. but then shipping 1,000 cases overseas.. expensive again.. then I would have to ship them to people.. its to much shipping costs where it be cheaper to get them made in the UK

Maybe if someone knows the guy doing the Amiga kickstarter.. then can ask what company they are using to do the molds ? I might have spoke to the guy before.. can't remember..

Still nothing from this company.. They said a couple of days it be sent and that was over a month ago. I asked them to refund the order over a week ago and I have not heard anything from them, so I just emailed them yet again to cancel and refund my order. I think over five months is clear they are just not going to do it. As to if I will get my money back or not is another question... It was around £450!

I asked if it was possible to print right from the start, they said yes, but clearly not. They said the top part was the problem, they had done the bottom part, I asked for a image.. they said they send one.. never did.. they keep saying it be sent in a couple of days.. never do...

They said the main problem was the small plastic parts the top of the case, I asked them a few times this could be fixed in the design files for better printing and never had a reply from them. I really do question if they even have a 3D printer at all!

I have been messed about for almost 6 months now.. been more than patient and fair with them, so I can only assume that I have being scammed by this company :( will give them 1 more week, then I will have to go to the small claims court to try and get my money back!

Do a charge back with the bank/credit card people?
You can still do this with debit cards but I think its more complex.

Our time is precious enough and when companies / people do this kind of thing it’s really annoying and frustrating.

Hope you get your money back Exxos.

I looked at it a little , seems if product never arrived I can claim back within 500 days or so. There was no delivery date stated, but I tink by law "reasonable" time is not heading on for 6 months!

Thanks. Yes, its why I really hate dealing with "3rd parties" for stuff, as tends to end up in disputes. I tend to avoid UK forms because of such things, and go to the USA etc as support is much better. Though I went for ireland this time as the price seemed more normal and it was more local company to me.

I can understand them saying they are trying to get the best print, fair enough, but they should have their stuff setup at its best before taking orders. They shouldn't be "experimenting" with customers products. Gives me the impression they don't know what they are doing as this has been ongoing for almost 6 months now

So I've been trying to look at the bank to get a refund, but I never call the bank for anything and it is always a total epic to basely re-register again to do anything.. As a payment was done via PayPal, I feel I would end up contacting them anyway as opposed to the credit card company. So I thought I'd give PayPal a try first.

Most of the problems was while I have a PayPal account I cannot use it as I am banned, and PayPal system wants me to login to open a dispute, which I can't as I had to do it as a guest payment is nothing to do with my account. So been battling with PayPal stupid menu for the past hour and finally managed to talk to someone.

They have removed the money from the account, and they say they will give them some time to reply to the dispute and if they do not reply they will refund me automatically.. It is a good job I did this today as it seems I can only open up a dispute for up 6 months, which is due in about a weeks time.

I emailed the company twice, I think they got stuck in my spam box filter, so I emailed them again and get an eye on my filters, and I did not have a reply from them anyway. So the past three times I have contacted them cancel and refund they have not done it. So making a claim via PayPal is anything I can do.

I think the whole PayPal system is just too messy and awkward, and just to impossible and frustrating to use. I've been struggling with the stupid guest checkout's for a long time to pay for some PCBs and such, but I think it is just time to move on. People cannot accept alternative payment methods to PayPal, then I just cannot use them any longer. My long-term PCB guy will lose a long-term customer for starters, but am not using this PayPal system any more. Hopefully they can at least get a refund which would actually be something but I'm not holding my breath.

Incidentally, I have not totally given up with finding the case solution. Currently I'm working with Icky on finishing the CAD files and making changes to the design. He's going to try and section off the design into smaller chunks so they can be printed. It has been talking about trying to glue the parts together some way. Initially we are just looking to get the design finished and some physical case that we can actually see it all fits together correctly.

I'm also talking to a UK firm for injection moulding. Cannot totally understanding the pricing structure, but so far their price seems half of what other companies are charging, and this could actually be realistic target, we are still looking around £25,000 for a fundraiser. Of course it is early days yet, I will keep posting here as things happen, but progress is likely to be extremely slow.

EDIT:
Nope £25,000 is just for the top half.. but been talking to a company for the past hour and we are looking into all the options..
