Thanks @mikro - I'll see if I can get any joy out of the existing RTCs I have. Actually the reason I took the Dallas unit out was because it heated up like a little iron when I first powered on with it inserted :shock:

Success!!! :D I managed to get some life out of the old Motorola RTC that had its pins all folded in - I don't think it is writing anything to NVRAM and I still get errors on that score, but I can run more tests than I could before. I also noticed that the clock buffer patch hadn't quite been finished off ( piggy back pins not connected) and there were some heavily fluxed areas around the back of the board on the RTC socket and elsewhere which I cleaned up (hence the toothbrush).

Anyway it boots now!! Next step to see if I can get the old HD working .....
