16Mhz Booster 2021 edition & Vofa stability

Post by Steve »

Hi all,

Recently been playing with Exxos 16mhz booster in my short-ST that has a Vofa. With the Vofa in it was crashing (random amounts of bombs at different times) I took the Vofa out (Vofa is an ET4000 display adaptor in case you don't know) and the system was stable. The machine had all the mandatory fixes, so I was wondering what I could do that I hadn't already done to help stability.

I remembered that I had 'upgraded' the RAM line-driver chips to 'F' types after reading information on Atari-forum where it was recommended for the PAK CPU upgrade boards, 'F' types are faster than the original 'LS' types. I then did some searching and saw in this thread: https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=254 - Exxos said:
LS being slower acts as a noise filter. F series is fast enough to react to the noise and will cause glitches and oscillations.
So I took out the F types, put the LS types back in and now all is stable.

Just writing this for others just in case somebody else hits this issue in the future...

Thanks for posting this.

I did a lot of tests on those "F" types as the "usual crowd" was saying they were better a while back. While they do have their uses, placing them in a STFM and/or MEGA ST only resulted in problems.

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1585 Have you done the Mandatory Fixes ?
Just because a lot of people agree on something, doesn't make it a fact. ~exxos ~
People should find solutions to problems, not find problems with solutions.
