Things are now different, than 26 years ago. Now accessibility of CF socket is a must, and that's of course good. Although, 160 MB IBM 2.5 inch drives gone dead so fast, that I should use them externally too  3 of in less than 1 year gone . While 2 60 MB WD 2.5 inch still work . Just reminded me little.

They did it on prototype board, pretty large. I think that location of CF socket depends much from motherboard and ST case revision. And may be influenced by users habit, place around on desk ...
There is 2 kind of people: one thinking about moving to Mars after here becomes too bad, the others thinking about how to keep this planet habitable.

Hey Guys,

i am the Author of the linked article.
I noticed this forum in my blogspot dashboard, and thought i might stop by.

First of all, i want to thank P. Putnik (i heard he is still around in this forum) for all the great work he has done for the community.
I used his mod on my floppy drives, and it is awesome.

Aside from the placement of the CF-Card, allow me to point out the other important detail in this modification.
I have used one of the two ground pins of the atari floppy connector for the HD signal.
When i searched for a way to connect two external HD Floppies to the Atari, i found nothing. Some people mentioned using the DS1 pin for that, but that would obviously only work with one single drive. I used one of the two ground pins for that, and this was not mentioned anywhere, at least not that i found on google.
So maybe this might be interesting to someone. This one pin is exposed on the floppy connector, and can be cut from the board without desoldering the connector. This, in combination with P. Putnik's drive modification, allows me to use two HD Floppy drives externally, without additional wires, without modification of the ST case, and with full support of the Atari-style disc change detection.

Feel free to ask me if there are any further questions.

I don't think anyone ever tried 2 external HD floppies.. Internal and external for sure...

What I used to do external is run a separate jack connector for the HD select wire..

And then modify the case..

If there is something bad to say, please do so.
I am always open for constructive criticism.
When i share projects like this, i do it to benefit everyone.

I might have done that, but this 520 STm is kind of a collector piece. I got it in original packaging,
outside totally unmodified. aside from some yellowed keys, it looks just like new. So i don't want to
modify the case at all, at least not visible from the outside. The CF-Socket is glued on the ROM-Socket,
but it can be removed at any time to restore the ST to its original state.

Thanks. I must say, after finishing it, i was a bit supprised that no one had ever done this, because it was easier than i expected. No cutting traces, no soldering on the mainboard.

Lastly, i am thinking about writing an english translation of the article, but maybe i am too lazy for that.

I like this idea. I was thinking of converting my UltraSatan to an all internal solution and this would be a nice place for the SD-slots.

I skipped through you blog and there is some really nice stuff there. I am into self-hosted servers, so I am always glad to find something about that, that makes me feel a little less crazy ;)

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the UltraSatan is connected to the ACSI port?
That port is nicely accesible inside the ST, at least in my model there are solder points right next to the connector.
Only Problem is, there is the screw hole right next to the ROM port, so it is really just luck that it fits with my CF socket.
But i have another idea:
You can mount the UltraSatan anywhere inside the case, and then use SD-Extenders to place the cards near the ROM socket.

Like this: https://www.amazon.de/Delock-Micro-male ... B00I0RO8Z8

These are for µSD-cards, but they are so tiny, that you might be able to place them so that the ROM socket is still usable.
Maybe one would be enough, you could have one normal SD card internally as boot drive, and one with µSD adaptor accessible for data transfer.
I am thinking about adding a second CF adaptor inside my ST for exactly this purpose.

For the server, i really love that thing. I call it my "vinculum". It brings order to the chaos. And a chaos of files i have indeed, over 6 TB of files by now. Might have to add another HDD this year. Also, i am thinking about migrating it from a BananaPi to an Odroid XU4. The Banana has "only" a 1.2 GHz dual core, and only USB 2.0. The Odroid XU4 has an 8-core Exxynos CPU and also has USB 3.0. But there are other things with higher priority right now.
