Public Service Announcement - QFP variant of the 68030

Post by Badwolf »

The QFP variant of the 68030s have pin number one in the middle of a side rather than on a corner.

This is probably worth noting when selecting an appropriate footprint for your PCB design as I imagine you'd feel quite stupid if you only realised this after spending half an hour searching for the short from VCC to GND on your soldered up new board.

I imagine.

It's quite obvious, especially when looking at the damned chips -- big hard to miss dot right in the middle of the side -- I'm just an eejit!

Ah, looks like you used a generic package lib not a 030 one then ?

Yeah -- I used an 030 specific schematic symbol, but not footprint. Spent all time making sure my schematic pins were correct (they were) but I didn't notice the funky numbering system.

Next revision will be back to PGA anyway as I found the QFP version an absolute bugger to solder. The pins are so long and flimsy it's like trying to tack down bakofoil. Had them, so I thought I'd give them a go on this board spin, but were never going to make it to a final design anyway.
