As I get into working on the unit, some observations:
- The hard drive spins but I hear no head seeking. My guess is that either the heads are stuck or the electronics are busted. Conner CP2088, 80MB. I'd be interested in getting that to spin again just to retrieve whatever is on there, so if anybody's dealt with one of these that seemed dead, I'd like to hear your experience.
- When I connect a mouse, it only travels up, down, and left; I figure a bad connection somewhere, either on the port itself, or the connection from the keyboard to the motherboard. To be investigated.
- The PSU ought to be recapped. I'm going to do that ASAP.
- The fan is hella noisy. I'm going to replace that very soon too.
- Video is quite dim in some video modes. I don't know if that's affected by the PSU or me driving bad OSSC settings; I figure it's worth looking at only after working on the PSU.
Also, there's no FPU, but I could add one cheap.
Finally, a question on fast ROMs: what's the consensus on these in terms of machine stability/software compatibility? My machine does have some of the U46 pads soldered, so perhaps I don't need to think about this?
Anything else on this machine I should be paying attention to? Anything in the images that seems unusual/interesting that you'd like a better shot of?
