Falcon maintenance

Post by stween »

So I picked up a Falcon; my first, after all these years. I like to keep machines close to original, but maintained.

The machine is in good nick: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sdstrowes ... 8950704225

More photos of the unit are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sdstrowes ... 8950704225

As I get into working on the unit, some observations:
  • The hard drive spins but I hear no head seeking. My guess is that either the heads are stuck or the electronics are busted. Conner CP2088, 80MB. I'd be interested in getting that to spin again just to retrieve whatever is on there, so if anybody's dealt with one of these that seemed dead, I'd like to hear your experience.
  • When I connect a mouse, it only travels up, down, and left; I figure a bad connection somewhere, either on the port itself, or the connection from the keyboard to the motherboard. To be investigated.
  • The PSU ought to be recapped. I'm going to do that ASAP.
  • The fan is hella noisy. I'm going to replace that very soon too.
  • Video is quite dim in some video modes. I don't know if that's affected by the PSU or me driving bad OSSC settings; I figure it's worth looking at only after working on the PSU.
Otherwise, the Falcon seems good. Common advice seems to be to change the Dallas IC beneath the keyboard, which I will get to (but I don't have the parts; is there much of a difference between the exxos RTC replacement or the centuriontech replacement? (I'm in the EU, may be easier to ship from the latter!)

Also, there's no FPU, but I could add one cheap.

Finally, a question on fast ROMs: what's the consensus on these in terms of machine stability/software compatibility? My machine does have some of the U46 pads soldered, so perhaps I don't need to think about this?

Anything else on this machine I should be paying attention to? Anything in the images that seems unusual/interesting that you'd like a better shot of?

Probably a clock patch to improve stability.

Finding a quiet fan that fits without mods might be a challenge (let me know if you succeed) - I tried the one from Exxos shop and still found it too loud - and in the end disabled it (as I dd with the original one 25 years ago :)

As long as you leave the Falcon in original state (and don't tune it with accellerator cards), it seems to able to handle it...

Best,

Best,
Well in a rush yesterday I picked up a Noctua NF-A4x10 5v fan and it looks physically like it'll fit, but now that I'm down there in the machine it looks like the Falcon provides 12v to the fan (I haven't confirmed through measurement, looking only at the labelling).

So maybe I'll pick up the 12V variant instead, or let it run fanless. Keeping things cool is good, but I'm not convinced a small fan in this location does much.

@stween

The fan is powered from 12v, but on most Falcons I work on I just wire it to 5v to half the speed/noise.

Also here is a recent Falcon I serviced, my blog might be useful for you: https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... =18&t=3810

Interesting idea; where do you pull the 5v from?

This is real nice; thank you!

Oh yeah, now I see it!

I'm not usually a huge fan (pun intended) of straying from the original, but maybe this one is worth it...

Different question for you: I recently picked up the Falcon PSU upgrade kit from your store, and this morning I was gonna do that work. But the kit is short one cap on the list (47uF 400V).

I can root around here and look for other parts, but my stock of parts is always hit or miss! How critical is the replacement of the 33uF 400V cap on the original PSU? Or is the description of the kit out of date?
