Booting Falcon without 12V?

Post by Badwolf »

Asci's not-working Falcon motherboard arrived & I hope to give it some care and attention over the next few weeks.

One thing on my mind is when it comes to power it up, though, I'd like to run it from the bench power supply in case anything's not as it ought to be.
  • Does it need the 12V line to boot?
  • If no, will any harm come from not having the 12V line?
  • If yes, should the 12V line come up before, after or within a certain window of the 5V line coming up?
I'm sure I've seen something about this in the past, but my Google-fu is weak today. Or perhaps that was for the ST.

Cheers,

I always forget, there is a couple things which use 12 but can't remember what. Best to look at the diagrams, but don't think it's a good idea to power up without 12v..

Audio, DSP port, Video port perhaps modulator uses 12V, but I wasn't sure if something would go pop if I powered one up without the other.

I'll put together a dual-pole switch and have two common-ground supplies, I think.

I recently repaired a Falcon mainboard. Powered it from +5V bench supply only. Didn't do any damage.
