SITE STORAGE SUGGESTIONS

Post by rpineau » Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:17 pm

May be we could store the file on Google Drive or DropBox instead of here and put links in the posts ? We don't have to but just thinking of an easy way for you to managed large amount for (large) files.
In any case .. I love this thread. Now I know exactly where to go to get these... instead of googling for them all the time :)

If this is an issue I could help out. Our datacenter is basically two doors away and it has a 10GBit link to the university and the rest of the world. As long as it is not commercial and roughly fits in the "science and education" scheme (which I believe historic computers do) I can more or less set up what I want. So if we need a FTP, Own-/Nextcloud or something alike this really would be no problem.

Its a thought. Though we are not talking huge volumes of files, mostly <1MB. I've got the floppyshop PDL hosted on my site for starters, plus a lot of game menus and STOS, so most stuff is hosted already. Some I did cross link, like GB6 to the main webpage anyway.

FWIW, I'm not a fan much of 3rd pary storage solutions. To many of them over the years have vanished, so it would trash all the links on the board should that happen.

At least everything being under one roof I can backup as a whole and not have to worry about losing links years down the line.

Somewhere in the mix I have got a FTP sever as well

Though is space does become a problem, I will sure look for solutions :)

Yea we should be fine. We tend to forgot that Atari software are not the multi megabyte software of today (and I'm the first one guilty of this :) ).

My offer stands for the foreseeable future, should things change.

The URL and backup issues could easily be solved by mounting the external FTP (or whatever) on a local path on the webserver btw. If the need arises this way a migration to a new external storage is possible also later on. Just copy the old data to the new storage and mount it on the old path afterwards. So no need to rush now :)
