SPDIF Interface

The SPDIF interface establishes a digital connection between the Falcon and a DAT recorder, CD player and sampler. The SoundPool SPDIF interface, Analog 8 and the ADAT interface can be used together at the same time.

Connecting the Interface to the Falcon

Use the special SoundPool D-sub DSP adapter cable to connect the SPDIF interface to the Falcon or Analog 8/4

Software Driver

You must install either FDI_INIT.PRG or MATRIX.PRG in the AUTO folder for use with Cubase Audio, WaveMaster, CDRecorder 2 and Zero-X. However, you do not need these drivers for AudioMaster, AudioTracker and DataDat.

Playback with Quartz Clock

Normally the wordclock at the SPDIF interface input is used for recording and playback. If this input wordclock is not present for playback (e.g. only one DAT recorder is used for recording and playback), you have to switch to the build in quartz clock of the SPDIF interface. You can select 44.1 kHz or 48kHz.

Cubase Audio: Hardware setup - input A/D Falcon and playclock 44.1 or 48 kHz
AudioTracker: Audio parameter - input SPDIF and playclock 44.1 or 48 kHz

Digital Mixers

For operation with digital mixing consoles the appropiate wordclock selection is required. Please refer to the mixer's manual. The SPDIF interface must be updated to the latest 24 bit firmware (Ser. no. starts with 24-...).

Using a Digital Mixer as Wordclock Master

Connect the mixer and the computer with the optical or coaxial cables. The mixer is the wordclock master and the computer the wordclock slave. Select the mode 44.1 INT or 48 INT from wordclock menu (Yamaha 02R). Select external wordclock at the computer.

Cubase Audio: Hardware setup - input FDI (this is always external)
AudioTracker: Audio parameter - input SPDIF and playclock external

Please note: In this mode only playback with the mixer's wordclock is recommented. If a DIGITAL I/O Error! message appears, you have to switch the computer to external wordclock.

Using a Digital Mixer as Wordclock Slave

If the computer only sends data to the mixer, you can use the quartz clock of the Falcon's SPDIF interface. All clock sources can be used for playback. Select SPDIF input from the wordclock menu at the mixer.

Hardware Issues

24 Bit Compatibility Problem: The first serial of SoundPool SPDIF interfaces was shipped with a 16 bit firmware. If your digital equipment uses 24 bit signals you have to upgrade the interface.

AD/DA Converter (Codec): The sound system of some Falcon computer's hangs if the SPDIF interface is connected. This is because ATARI used an ITT codec instead of the Crystal chip since Ser. No. Y43*****02400.

Solution 1: Exchange the codec chip. The Crystal chip is called CS 4216-KL.
Solution 2: Use the SoundPool Analog 8/4 Interface for playback.

Protection Resistor: Close to the voltage controller you will find a resistor with 10 Ohms and 1 Watt. If this resistor is damaged please exchange to a new one.

SPDIF Interface Features

Power supply: 12V supplied from the Falcon DSP Port

Coaxial Input: Cinch Connector SPDIF Format
Coaxial Output: Cinch Connector SPDIF Format
Optical Input: Optical Connector (TOS Link) SPDIF Format

Just because a lot of people agree on something, doesn't make it a fact. ~exxos ~
People should find solutions to problems, not find problems with solutions.
