Heatsink with integrated fan

Post by mikro »

Hi guys,

have you ever seen a heatsink like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Aluminum-Heats ... 3371063969 but smaller (say 40x40mm, ideally less). There's like a million of fans and coolers all over the net but I'm failing to identify the right word when it comes to heatsinks like this one.

Those style of fans were popular on video cards and motherboard chipsets. I just used to look for "heatsink integrated fan" , "chipset cooler" , "gpu heatsink" , "northbridge cooler" I'm not sure on their proper technical name.

On the motherboard they were smaller than the video cards, not sure on the sizes, I just remember having to repair a lot of them in the early to mid 2000's. There not really that good. Fan would fail could never get the right fan would mostly just screw or cable tie a generic fan on top of the heatsink. Zalman, Thermaltake, Swift, Coolermaster were the common brands.

Here's a 40mm x 40mm x 10mm

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1pcs-40 ... 81804.html

Smaller I think :

What are you trying to cool?
Will a taller decent heatsink not work instead?
All else fails get some copper coins and some thermal glue people have done that :)

Unfortunately, that size applies only to the fan (yes, a rather misleading title/description there).

I want it for my Falcon's CT2 card, its heatsink is about 30x30x8mm (sitting on an 030) and I need to attach a fan to it. As you can imagine, the biggest enemy is the height, it must fit below 15mm all together otherwise the keyboard makes inadequate pressure to the CPU. I have room to use a slightly bigger heatsink/fan when it comes to width/length but not height unfortunately.

Are you using the metal shielding still ? Assuming it fits over the. CT that is..

Nope, don't even have it for this Falcon. As I said, the biggest problem is the keyboard, the CT2 (in contrast to the CT60 for instance) has the CPU too close (mostly because it uses the original PSU so there wasn't much room in the front part).

I don't understand all the advertisement materials from that time claiming it would fit the standard case -- first you have to use only a 32 MB low profile SIMM to make that happen in the first place (what sounds pretty bad if the max. you can use is 128 MB but there's no way to find module that height with such capacity) and second the fan issue.

I had this problem before with a Amiga card trying to find a low profile simm that would fit and had no chips on the back that would catch on everything else. I did find 1 in the end on eBay but it cost alot for what it was.

What's the size of the simm that can fit?

I see some on Amazon, eBay and some Amiga places listed as low profile they seem to be around £30

We had been discussing it here: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=28770 ... typical low profile SIMMs >32 MB seem to be about 26mm what is too much. I need something no more than 20-21 mm. If you find any SIMM above 32 MB with such size, I'd pay anything for it. ;)

Crazy idea 1 .... how much of the simm could you shave/sand off without damaging a trace or something?

Desperate measure 2... use ribbon cable and solder each pin on the simm to the pin its meant to go and glue it flat, prob not a good idea with a expensive accelerator card really.

Crazy idea 3... make a weird adaptor... cut a bad/cheap simm pins off but still as a board, cable it out to another simm socket or simm, stick it flat somewhere else. Kind of like a simm extender.

Crazy idea 4... ask Exxos to magic up some weird right angled PCB adaptor, if his brain can just stop making everything else for 2 mins, bet his already thought of it months ago

Desperate/cheap choose a side

I already got asked to make some low profile simms for it a couple years ago.. problem I think was finding DRAM to physically fit nevermind the PCB.. plus its another project I just don't have time to start anyway.

Some kind of crazy right angle adapter would probably be the better idea..

Thank you guys for your input (on both topics). I'll post my results if/when I decide what to do.

One small question - how good / bad idea is it to put a fan on the CPU without any heatsink? You see where this is coming from, I could remove the heatsink and replace it with fan, leading to better (?) cooling.
