A worrying trend?

Post by PeteW » Mon Aug 13, 2018 9:34 pm

Could this end up making it much harder to keep old software titles alive? Or is it a non issue?

I think similar issues with Atari... "Atari" own the rights to pac-man still, plus some others, so any site offering such games can legally get sued. Similar with "donkey kong" by Nintendo... though I don't know about other Aaari produced games or if they own the rights to them or not.

Nintendo is launching a subscription service for its latest Switch console in September, which will include access to some of its retro titles.

Could be the same with 2600 titles.. if Atari are pushing them in the flashback console they they wouldn't be happy if ROMs could be downloaded.. but again.. its what they actually own the rights to... They may not have any rights to most of the ROM's they are pushing with the consoles.

Wonder if thats why that other gaming ROM site went down as well a few weeks ago...

I don't think that this will be some trend. And consoles are different from home, personal computers.
Some 10 years ago sites with old games for DL were shut down more-less regularly , and then it stopped, and that got called abandonware.
+ many of copyright owners made it PD legally .
And Atari people has some hosts were can up and down load stuff. Without sites, so hardly will be noticed, if it will go so far.
There is 2 kind of people: one thinking about moving to Mars after here becomes too bad, the others thinking about how to keep this planet habitable.

Couldn't they just asked what the offending titles were and removed those rather than taking the whole site down

Seems like a history repeat somehow.. how corporations get involved with a community to milk it for all its worth destroying it as they go along.

And history also tought, that it never worked. People will always find ways to circumvent these limitations. Paying the lawyers to sue these is a waste of resources.

At one time this was normal, a new case, a new site, a new target every other week in the late 90's to mid 2000's

Then it all seemed to calm down and nothing like this was going on now its picking back up again, prob to do with all those relaunched classic plug and play consoles that are everywhere now.

From what I can see they are planning on re-releasing the games on one of their own platforms via an emulator for money, which is well within their rights to do. Having the games available for free would, therefore, be a problem for them.

It's not rocket science that they would wish to enforce their copyright so as not to damage the worth of their IP.

Remember that copyright lasts at least 70 years. "Abandonware" doesn't exist in law.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.
