So the 030 running at 8MHz does a pretty poor job and easily gets beaten be a stock STE.

At 16MHz with caches off, it basically isn't much different than a 16MHz STE.. but of course the 030 has more efficient core, so int-div is much faster than a stock STE by far, but other results are not much different.

I use RGB to scart.

yep, figures are not so impressive, but when we compare Falcon with similar solutions from the same era, it doesn't look so bad:

Code: Select all

Read LW (MB/s) Write LW (MB/s)
Amiga 1200, 020/14, Chipram 4.500 6.900
Falcon 030/16, ST-ram 5.345 6.488
TT 030 32MHz, ST-ram 7.867 7.867
TT 030 32MHz, Fastram 12.615 15.772

Here we can see that Falcon with it's 16 bit bus has better memory (read) performance faster than Amiga 1200 with full 32bit bus.

Not good idea to judge CPU speed by tests which mostly use blitter. I tried to make Falcon tests without blitter, but it seems impossible. XBIOS 64 will ret 1 for blitter on always, even after off command. Probably there is no pure CPU code for VDI at all in Falcon TOS.
So, I tried test with CPU at 8 MHz and blitter at 16 MHz, but it is then even slower. Although it may be TOS 4.02 too. Or who knows what. Integer division is 251%. both cashes on. All it is really messy somehow. But need to know that blitter latency is bigger in Falcon. To compare real CPU power need tests without blitter. With GB6 only integer division is what is visible. But with 68030 shift, rotate is much faster too. Especially if it is more bits (steps) because speed is same as for 1 bit shift (unlike by 68000, where more bits need more time). And that affects some graphic operations for sure. CPU can scroll well Giana, even on Falcon, right because of faster shifts, on ST(E) it is too slow. http://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/greatgs.html
TT version.

You can't turn the blitter off in the falcon :(

NVDI turns the BLiTTER off.
can pls you compare STE with NVDI vs Falcon with NVDI?

I only have floppy on my falcon at the moment, so not a simple task to setup :(

NVDI does not turn blitter off. It 'turn off'' complete VDI code of TOS - or better said just use it not at all .
