Image height being cropped at correct 640x400 res.

Post by Cosmic Puppet »

Discovered this trying to make a desktop from The Fifth Element movie poster. The bottom kept getting cut off even with the correct canvas size. Drove me nuts!

The magic number turns out to be 381 pixels high! (It chops 19 pixels off the bottom. God knows why and probably so do the Atari ST developers.
Here's what I had to do. I've used another image after being driven mad by the Fifth element lol

I have however managed to make the thing which I'll include here. Works on Deskpic without being chopped now. :cheer:

19 pixel is the height of the menubar, when using the 8x16 system font. I guess the desktop draws the image below the menubar, not at 0,0.

That was the conclusion I came too @thorsten.otto

However this conversion puts it under the 10mm of the menu bar.

Maybe my monitor displays it differently than on the Atari compatible CRT I used to use.

I just kept putting the number down until it stopped cropping (which took some considerable time!) :coffee:

I think the menu bars height varies on TOS versions as well. I think on the ST I had to use 12px, but on the Falcon it was 19. I think in part on the falcon it was down to the 3D effect. Its possible it could vary between resolutions also ?

Thanks @exxos. So many idiosyncrasies with the Atari!

I've never had a desktop pic which had important info on the bottom edge before, so never noticed. :)

Yes, the height on the menu bar will vary. The above mentioned 19pixel is only for SingleTOS, and when using the 8x16 system font (ST-High, or TT-High resolutions). Naturally, it will change when using the 8x8 system font (eg. ST-Low or medium). Other AES like XaAES may put some 3D effect on it, so there might be a small difference. And obviously it will change when you replace the system font to something else.

But i think in most cases, that will not be a problem for his purpose. Obviously, when using other resolutions, you will need a different image anyway.
