Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge -- Remade for STe

Post by sporniket » Sat Apr 10, 2021 6:35 pm

You know the drill, go fast, avoid pesky bots and hazards, and finish first. (Well fortunately for me there is automatic gear)

Now it has been remade to take advantage of the blitter and sound. It's smooth and shiny. Require 1 Mb RAM and a blitter, at the minimum.

Fantastic effort !

You can have all the new hardware in the world but what are these old computers without software ;)

Very cool to see the stuff we were longing for back in the day in terms of using the actual ste improvements - for anything! I played this game a lot, especially the two player mode , and this is for sure a major upgrade.
I’m impressed the blitter can draw that much stuff in a frame, frankly this is outside of the scope I was under the impression it could be used for as it seems most of the graphics in the game is actually done by it now. And then digisound on top of it all :P

So thanks again to everyone involved, for this great labor of love!!

Co-author of Lotus STE here :D

Thanks for your kind words!

You're correct in saying that the Blitter is used to draw most of the in-game graphics - the only thing we're not using it for the solid expanses of sky about the mountains, where the 68000 has the edge.

I've learned absolutely loads about the Blitter on this project, and in particular, the best way to use it in practice in a typical game scenario where timing is crucial due to music, rasters and so on. When programmed efficiently, it's outperformed the 68000 on everything apart from the aforementioned solid blocks of sky. I'll be happy to talk in more detail about how we've used the Blitter if anybody is interested, and of course the source code to our changes is at https://github.com/jonathanopalise/lotus-ste.

Junosix has done an amazing job on the sound side of things. I'm not so tuned in (excuse the pun) on the sound side of things but I think it's one of the few STE games that's using the CPU in-game to mix two sound samples simultaneously.

We're moderately excited about continuing to use what we're learned and implemented in future projects to show the full potential of the STE!
