TF for 68k Macintosh?

Post by dlxmax »

This is a great project. And I've searched quite a bit on what I'm about to ask, but nothing has turned up.

Have there been any attempts to get a TF working in a classic boxy 68k Mac?

The TF534 could very well fit a Macintosh Plus, for example.
I'd be interested.

Height would be a major issue. There’s not a lot of space above the logic board and the frame and the TF536 is pretty tall, probably 1.5cm-2cm.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

I just measured on a Macintosh Plus, and when sliding in the mainboard the minimum clearance is more than 1.5cm.
Once in place, the clearance exceeds 2cm, and you can reinstall the mainboard by flexing the frame instead.

Take a look at this massive card that even added four more simm slots.

There's interest out there for this. It's nearly impossible to find an accelerator for sale these days.

Been working on this myself. Plenty of accelerator cards made for these classic macs over the years - including 68030 ones. The MicroMac cards were huge, too.

CPU isn't socketed though, it's soldered. However the SE has an expansion slot that can be used. Not out of the realm of possibility, basically... But not plug and play for sure.

Most (all?) Mac Plus accelerators used a piggy-back clip on top of the 68k.
That said, I'd be fine with desoldering the stock 68k--I'd put in a socket.
So, Kai, what have you been "working on"?
