MSX2 mostly use the Ricoh-RP5C01 clock chip:

Not just for retrieving the time but for config data like screen resolution etc.

Further down the line you could emulate this using the ARM? :)

Not sure it's any help at all, but the Omega MSX2 clone is GPL3, so may be of some assistance?
(I may be trying to teach Granny how to suck eggs here :-) )

You can make it better though,
like packing all glue logic into a single cpld.. :idea:

Yes but let me sort out the issues first. They need a bunch of patch wires right now. I've fired these bad boys up for the first time lately.

I may actually respin them instead of trying to continue with the rev0s.
