That was DiagROM. I don't know if it outputs anything on the serial port, though.
A kludge is a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain.

So... I'm getting output more often than not, but it fails at different times. And sometimes passes checks and sometimes fails them. Bad connections?

I'd be very surprised if those would see whats happening. they arent even x10 probes. :/

I have a 2 channel 50 MHz scope as well, so I could start measuring the signals induvidually :)

Annoyingly the spare HP1661CS on my lab floor would tell me the problem in seconds.
