Would definitely need an LA if I started with PLDs then.

Will keep that one on the back burner for now but got the programmers etc already.

ATF15xx series needs its own special programmer.

The good thing about them is they 5v, and the software is suioer simple. Its almost like notepad with a compiler  none of this 30gb bloatware rubbish. I like the altera software, but takes more getting used to. I've only used itnoince and that was like a year ago. But at least its not to bad to get going with. Really just want to stick to simple chips until I have need to go bigger. Hard to keep everything in my head all at once

Yeah, could route it all though a larger PLD as well I guess, or like you say, bus drivers.

A few steps forward over the last few days. Working with Exxos have reverted to using some GALs to reduce the many logic chips.

Cartridge Port Breakout board is read to work with breadboard. This helps to get most of the data lines and address lines out.

A few more steps forward.

Still a bit more to do
  • Tying several pins down to ground
  • Adding in all the extra lines back to the ST
  • Checking everything out
A big mess-o-wires

Wow indeed! Who would have thought such a "simple" circuit would end up like that, I'm starting to appreciate PLD's a whole lot more all of a sudden  Though I also really hate PLD's

Ever so slowly getting there. Christmas has definitely got in the way.

Have ran out of test hooks to help with the setup and also need to finish off a few grounding of unused pins on some of the chips.

Hoping to power up tomorrow after crafting a few more wires to add to the mess.

Also appreciating that this, although simple, is one wiring nightmare. Roll-on PLD version if this one works.

Now that's a proper prototype! Yeah, it will all come together in the end and be the worlds first stable IDE solution ;)
