Which atmel pld are you planning to use? I really should start looking at stuff like that, fpgas etc.
ATF1508 mostly. ATF1504 is a bit cheaper but less gates.

Would definitely need an LA if I started with PLDs then.

Will keep that one on the back burner for now but got the programmers etc already.
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

ATF15xx series needs its own special programmer.

The good thing about them is they 5v, and the software is suioer simple. Its almost like notepad with a compiler  none of this 30gb bloatware rubbish. I like the altera software, but takes more getting used to. I've only used itnoince and that was like a year ago. But at least its not to bad to get going with. Really just want to stick to simple chips until I have need to go bigger. Hard to keep everything in my head all at once

but 2 pairs of bus drivers on it, one pair in byte swapped mode and one pair in non swapped mode. Then you can switch between this both pair depend on what happens on the bus. If its a command access then use the non swapped pair and if its a data transfer then swap it (works in thunder and soon in lightning ST too)

Yeah, could route it all though a larger PLD as well I guess, or like you say, bus drivers.

We use a xilinx cpld and rout all data lines through this but you need a large one. Maybe you can use a simple AND or a OR gate to compine Addresslines to save in/outputs of the cpld!

Possible I guess.. I already have the address bus routed to the SEC PLD, the control lines should fit.. not sure about the databus... I will probably just use a second PLD for the whole IDE circuit.. makes life a bit easier as the PLD on the booster is pretty cramped already. Saying that its only the databus inversion which is the issue really. As you say, 2 pairs of bus drivers is all it really needs.. Bit early days yet anyway.

A few steps forward over the last few days. Working with Exxos have reverted to using some GALs to reduce the many logic chips.

Cartridge Port Breakout board is read to work with breadboard. This helps to get most of the data lines and address lines out.

A few more steps forward.

Still a bit more to do
  • Tying several pins down to ground
  • Adding in all the extra lines back to the ST
  • Checking everything out
A big mess-o-wires
