The board you're referring to is designed to fit H5 series motherboards. There is a separate project in development for original machines which has the connector on a cable as you describe. There will be more threads on all this in due time.

That's great, I just saw earlier photos and I thought that this desing evolved in that way. On those newer motherboards, socket on pcb really makes sense.

As you know I have been working on the H4/5 version Phoenix Shifter but from that I have spun off an STFM version.

As you can see there is now a ribbon cable that actually fits well under the video circuitry can hinges so you don't have to remove the lid and it will shut properly. Render below shows folded cable but it can go under the back hinges.

The HDMI connector is on its own small board which allows fixing where is best for the user to get the port out of the case.

The boards are as small as I could get them. My goal was to try to fit it all in the foot print of the original shifter but I couldn't quite make it. I think its small enough though. Example of the two versions below H4/5 and STFM:

I am in the middle of building up these boards to test but you get the idea how these will work and how small they are.

That is impressive. Of course this would be useful for any traditional ST with a DIP Shifter, not just the STFM.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Indeed. Any DIP shifter can be replaced. In fact I intend testing this board in my 520ST.
