I guess a compromise to consider would be cutting off 10 lines at the top and 10 at the bottom, distributing the lost area evenly. Realistically, most CRTs didn't show 100% of the full screen picture anyway. I'm pretty sure that scaling will yield unacceptable results.

Perhaps a mode switch could have the user switch between several clipping modes.

@sandord - definitely possible as we already have jumpers to allow different settings. These can be seen further back in the thread in the jumper setting photo.

Just to update we are continuing to work on the Phoenix Shifter from various angles.

The team have been looking at some of the sync areas and have made progress in fixing bugs. We still are continuing to work on the shifter part of the firmware to move it closer to a near perfect ST Shifter.

Additionally we are investigating an option to use DisplayPort instead of HDMI due to HDMI having ludicrous licensing around it. DisplayPort to HDMI cables are very common and will still allow the the ability to plug into any HDMI device. This however will take some time as we will need to build a board to test and modify the firmware.

Lastly we have been experimenting with a boot logo for the Phoenix Shifter that appears on power up.

There is lots more to come but we are working in our spare time to hopefully bring you a fully fledged and thoroughly tested board.

It’s more than just me being busy. It’s a team effort, @Smonson and @troed are busy looking at the shifter core as well behind the scenes.

Would of used that smiley twice @PhilC in that last comment :)

We have been refining the design of the Phoenix Shifter board and we now have a V3 design.

So what is new?
  • We have made the board smaller
  • Taken the right hand mount point away near the video connector as it is not needed with the left mount point and the VSYNC line plugging into the H4/5
  • 3.3V <-> 5V translators now slung underneath inside the shifter DIL footprint
  • Smaller in footprint FPGA but bigger in size (more logic elements and logic array blocks)
  • New Micro JTAG connector to reduce the normal JTAG connector size - viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1718&start=10#p44580
  • New Audio Codec chip to allow us to develop sound out through the video connector and provide mixing of the following inputs and outputs:
    - Inputs for the 3x YM sound chip channels
    - Inputs for L and R stereo channels from the S2 Wave board as seen on the H5 design - viewtopic.php?f=73&t=2801&start=30#p40405
    - 1x spare input line
    - Output for L and R stereo for connecting whatever line out you wish such as a 3.5mm phono jack where the old modulator hole is in the case
We still have a long way to go in building the boards and the firmware but hopefully this gives you a glimpse into the work going on behind the scenes
