TRUDIE V5.2 (5 volt) pre-release install guide

Post by exxos » Mon Dec 21, 2020 7:35 pm

Trudie , a acronym for "True IDE" is a advanced IDE interface with automatic byte swapping. This allows you to use CF cards in Windows and ST without the slowdown of normal byte swapping in software. Trudie V5.2 operates at the maximum possible speed on a 8MHz system.

Trudie has been tested with HD8.47 and HD11.01 by Uwe Seimet www.hddriver.net to use Trudie. No other drivers are likely to work and have indeed not been tested. Setup partitions as usual in HDdriver as TOS & WINDOWS compatible, DO NOT turn on byteswapping!

IRQ WIRE (needed for TOS206 AUTOBOOT)

Black wire is the suggested location for a convenient connection point for the IRQ wire..

Keyboard input output connector ( this will only work if you have the LED widget)

This feature allows the drive light to flash blue when accessing the IDE interface.

Yellow and orange wires so the connection to the H5 / H4 motherboard. if you do not have the LED widget board, you must just leave JP20 on the motherboard jumpered like normal.

ROM CHIP ENABLE (H4 / H5 only)

Trudie drives the DualTOS ROM on the H4/H5. It can generally drive TOS104 and TOS206 (EMUTOS is fine also).

The green wire connects to the right pad on the motherboard JP13. on the H4 JP13 is located a little further to the left.

LEDs

The left yellow LED is "interface active". The right side green LED is "IDE active".

I decided to go with this approach as will help with diagnosing any potential issues... For example if the active LED is on, you know the interface is working correctly but if the IDE drive itself is not found, then chances are you have a bad cable or bad adapter or bad card etc.

KNOWN ISSUES

Please note :

Trudie V5.2 is basically a beta version and is sold at a lower cost because of this.
It is 5 VOLT only and is not designed to work on the H5's 3.3V bus.
While Trudie can work on original STFM machines etc, it has not been tested & I am not officially supporting or diagnosing issues on original machines.
HD8.47 and HD11.01 work fine. HD 8.04 goes totally nuts, so versions below 8.47 are probably not going to work.

Trudie is based on the previous R1C IDE interface Which has had extensive testing on various IDE hard drives and flash cards. However as Trudie has support automatic byte swapping, it is possible slower cards may not be supported or function correctly.

I recommend using HD driver 11 as at the time of typing it is the latest version and support byte swapping. I'm not aware or have tested any other driver software. Though I assume no other software supports this feature. Even if it does, it may not be compatible with Trudie as it was developed with HD11.

Trudie 5.2 is only designed to work on 8MHz systems. Trudie 5.4 is designed for a wider range of bus speeds and CF card support. but I do not know which point this version will be released. It really depends on what issues people find with V5.2.

There is a already known issue that the databus pullups on the motherboard must be 2.2K. Otherwise data corruption may occur or the interface a malfunction or not be recognised etc. H4 series motherboards generally had 2.2K ( please check out some I have been fitted with 4.7K). H5 series motherboards A3 & B1 Were fitted with 4.7K. So you may need to take some 4.7K SIL's on somewhere like (almost) shown in the images above.

7 now in store

https://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/store2/#0206

Note I am classing this as a BETA and its 5V only. The future 5V versions will be double price as I do not plan on making many of them. As said before, my main focus is on the 3.3V stuff on the H5 boards now.

If your wanting to fit this to a original machine, you need to do all the mandatory fixes for starters. As those machines are just unstable, I am not officially supporting them anymore. All boards are tested on the H4/H5 platform only. I would recommend only using MODE6 CF cards/devices.

Could you explain a little bit more the solution to this known issue? Please bear with me, my electronic knowledge is limited. :-)

I can see that you installed those resistors networks(?) in the port #3; I imagine those are the one you are referring that need to be installed to solve this issue. So, if I understand correctly (and probably I'm not), the new resistors are installed in parallel to the original RNs, then they should be around 4.1K to get the 2.2K desired, right?

From your pictures, it seems that you have 3x 8 pins resistors networks. On the 5V ports, pins 1-5 and 54-64 are the data lines, so that matches the position of the black resistors networks you installed. But here it is another confusion I have: for the "new" resistors networks, I thought one pin should be connected to 5V (maybe the white cable you see in the second picture?). But that does not match the picture: for example, it seems all the pins of one of the resistors network are soldered to pins 1-8 (1-5 should). So, there is something I'm missing.

Last, but not least: I imagine it does not matter to change the pullups values (from 4.7K to 2.2K) of the other lines? (non-data: 6-8 and 50-52; 49 and 53 are NC)

Sorry for so many questions, but you know the saying: measure twice, cut once. :-)

Thanks,

Andres.

@Icky Trudie works fine without them, but it doesn't on my machine.. So I would just try it first... It was the databus which seemed to need 2.2K.

Do you plan to release a 3.3v version of Trudie ?
