32.084988MHZ oscillator shortages

Post by exxos » Fri Oct 16, 2020 3:23 pm

I have managed to source about 30 more of these but basically once these are gone that is it :(

I have not actually looked for a crystal oscillator of that frequency yet... So I am wondering if anyone has come across any oscillator driver chips which work well as we may have to start reusing the oscillator from the original machines.. Is not a great option as they may well vary in speed, so I need to look for the actual crystals.

I think someone said digi-key can custom make them, but I think I looked a few weeks ago and it would actually be quite expensive to buy them in bulk..I really don't like using Digi Key anyway.

So thought I'd mention it and throw it out there to see if anyone else has any ideas on a solution..

I remember someone was talking about that you could order custom from Farnell/Mouser/DigiKey in some thread, some time ago.

EDIT: Apperently didn't read the whole post. Sorry about that!

Sp this schematics will take the original crystal in the ATari and make it an oscillator (same size as well). SOlder xtal ontop and all the smt parts on the bottom and some pins in the corners:

And it became this monstrosity:

The board is just 19x12mm... and I'm a bit drunk at the moment so let's see if it will actally do the job. Yeah, the board is ordered. Lot's of different 0603 parts involved as well. Apparently JLCPCB only do assembly from 20x20mm... hmm

I did wonder about recreating the 32mhz gen, but its output is pretty bad. Good design on the PCB though. At least its a option! Its why I was asking about a more dedicated more modern solution to it. Probably can be done but not looked into it yet.

I am asking around some companies to see what it would cost in getting some made.

Looks like the crystal though not a oscillator ?

Yes - for the circuit designed above.

Interestingly enough I found Atari's part number on Alibaba for the oscillators ... now that I have a hard time believing.
