As I had to recap my Mega ST psu, I thought it would be good to also tackle the noise created by ATARI's fan. Enter the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX:
It's thicker than the Noctua 10 mmm fan I've seen in another mod here, moving the same amount of air in the reduced noise mode as the 10 mm fan does on full speed.
I used the old screws, as the enclosed silicon (damping) mounts would require larger mounting holes and - after air flow comparison with the old ATARI fan - chose the lower of the two reduced noise adapters included (runs with 3700 rpm only now).
The fan cable runs below the psu and also with (Noctua's noise adapter) below the floppy, allowing to easily change or remove the noise adapter plugged into the Noctua connector cable, which I soldered in exchange of the old fan cable to the PSU.
The noise difference is massive ... attached in the zip are two 10s mp3 recorded from 15cm distance (with my phone):
Pimp my PSU (less VROOM :-))
Re: Pimp my PSU (less VROOM :-))
Cool I think a few people on here have done the same mod due to the fan noise.
