VAT charges to EU states

Post by exxos »

Just a reminder that EU states will have to pay import charges to the courier when buying from exxos store next year. Typically the charges ( at least for me buying goods ) are 20% VAT with the courier charging around £8-£15 for the privilege of sending you the bill.

I expect to lose some EU customers over the next year. In particular low value orders where the charges can end up being more than the cost of the goods.

With the UK being the biggest customers followed by USA, even if I lost all my EU customers, it would be a bit of a blow, but it wouldn't be enough for me to shut down my store.

With most of my parts coming from USA and China, I am paying thousands in import vat and charges every year. If the UK had a trade deal with them , I would saves thousands in import costs and goods in my store would start to go down. Though I fear its very unlikely that would happen. Ironically, if I didn't have to pay import costs, that total sum saved would be higher than profits made selling to EU customers.

Overall, I do not expect prices to increase on store goods as I am already paying huge import costs. I almost never buy anything from the EU anyway. Though of course people inside the EU from my store are going to be subject to import charges by the courier.

People should also be aware that packages are not delivered until you personally pay the charges. My concern is there will be some idiots out there who won't pay the charges then start sending me abuse as they haven't had their package.

If this starts to become a problem then I will be forced to either charge more to EU customers, or simply stop selling to problem EU countries all together. I hope it doesn't come to that, but knowing how many idiots are out there... I get enough drama with people who cant enter their address properly without dealing with more issues with people. I will likely just start banning such people from my store initially and see how things go over the next year.

Well I certainly would expect us to go into trade negotiations with USA/China very soon. But hey, politics doesn't always follow logic.

Well, I will still order items that can only be found in the store, or that need that kind of "carefully selected by exxos" seal of approval. Just wait longer between orders to accomodate the supplemental customs fees.

The first one seems backwards to me ?!

I didn't know we had to pay VAT to export within the EU.. Thought the whole idea was VAT free in the EU... But this first image says otherwise..

This one I get, sure we out of the EU, so packages on import export get charged VAT.. but that seems to conflict with the above image ?! I dont get it. Maybe VAT gets charged on postage when I send stuff and never knew it

Graphics seem to be correct - within the EU, it is the seller (you) who pays VAT, and there are no custom fees. As for now, when you export goods from the non-EU to the EU countries, the VAT and customs fee are paid (or not) by the importer in the destination country. It is about to be changed, and then it will be exporter liability to pay VAT and customs fees, via a dedicated platform, provided by the destination country in the EU. This is mainly due to private import from China. Formally we had to pay VAT and custom fees, but almost no one does it.

Are there any EU people who brought stuff from my store recently here ? I wonder if you guys get charged import vat now or not ?!

I still don't get what's going on. We have to fill out customs form's but that seems to be about it. We didn't have to do that for EU before but now do, which is fair enough.

For me buying goods from USA , mouser have had the option to pay vat fees up front for ages with dhl. With ups it would get sent a bill to pay. Though I think ups can't take payments online which is a right faff, but don't remember exactly if it was ups.

Sending goods to USA seem vat free under £800 ish according to parcel2go.

Me buying from China on aliexpress is now charging 20% vat.. But thing is, I would have had to pay that anyway, BUT royal mail would have charge £8 to send me the bill.. So it would actually now seem cheaper to buy stuff from China now..

Me buying from EU I assume is same as buying from USA etc where vat will be charged.. But in light of some 5 year EU deal for fishing rights, I lost then plot if things are vat free in and out of EU or not now..

More confusing is over the years the low value threshold for free imports has decreased to about £15, but AFAIK EU did away with that rule so vat is applied on all goods.. And the UK being part of the EU at the time adopted that rule and still operate by it...

But that would also mean if I buy goods from USA China etc and they do not collect the vat at the time of sale, that the courier , be it ups,RM etc will send you a bill at the time of import, which they do now anyway..

Even more confusing is the EORI number thing, which is supposed to be a requirement for all business , otherwise its apparently illegal to import export goods.. So how many people are operating without one then ?! I had to register for one to get some goods last year, but at no point otherwise has any courier asked for one.. If it was such a big deal , why don't the royal mail customs stickers require them ? Or any other documents for that matter.

Overall , as long as someone pays the fees, who the hell cares ? I'm assuming , hence the question, if EU customers are now getting import charges or not ? I assume so...

I've noticed Aliexpress now add the VAT to orders now, so buying £50 worth of bits from them now costs £60 at POS instead of £50+ £10 VAT+£8 added by royal mail, which is preferable.
Digikey prices for me haven't changed as they have always included import fees.
I almost never buy in from the EU, so I've no clue on how that's working for people.

Edit, I see you've mentioned the Aliexpress vat issue in the above post :)

It's nice to know there is some early benefit from Brexit.

In Poland (so EU) so far, it was buyer liability to declare and pay customs and VAT (in case of private import). I guess no one really did that, so effectively private import via AliExpress was tax and customs free (unless you decided to ship by UPS or DPD). If you were unlucky 1 out of 10 orders, was checked by Polish customs' office, and you were charged by Polish Mail some extra fee, and of course VAT/customs-fee. Recently our government decided to tighten VAT system, so now, all goods from AE come from Belgium (officially), still without any taxes/customs. How do they come to Belgium stays a secret ;)
