The real life of a printer toner

Post by DrF » Fri Jan 04, 2019 11:43 am

More adventures in printing :D

I was wondering about something, I have a toner in old HP laserjet that was rated for 1500 pages, when it finally ran out of toner and refused to print (it was on 0% for a long time) it had done somewhere around 3500 pages.

In a recent experiment I managed to refill this toner after bypassing the toner level a epic story with a shockingly simply end, I will add later
Since then i've managed another roughly 2000 pages now it's fading so time for another refill, to be fair I only got about 50 grams in it last time it should be 85 grams so its done well.

I'm not on about toner here i'm wondering about the actual life of the parts. It would seem the actual toner mechanicals can far out last there actual rated life. I know that quality at some point will start to drop off, but it only prints text labels and invoices so it don't have to look super anyhow. On that subject I noticed after refilling the thing it printed better than it did before at any point, much darker text I assume that's the different toner.

So we are now upto about 5500 ish pages.

LBH here, they don't want you to refill or otherwise extend the life of these parts,as the printers don't make the money, the consumables do.

I do want to hear about the kitchen/toner incident though. That stuff is a nightmare to get rid of!

Here are some of the pics from that day, there's more, I cant even remember what was going on so I will try and explain where I can

This was the untouched page count from the good cartridge that was about to run out, in barely 3 months it had done 3000 pages, something had to be done :

I first noticed something was wrong when I set my clock wrong and the printer took that time. Why did the printer jump 2 days into the future when the PC's clock was wrong? I figured if its getting its date from the PC what else is it getting?

Here it is with the correct date but the page count has still counted up. Now I know that the page count and toner % dont go together as its printed another 200+ pages with 0 pages left.

So I wondered what would happen if I set the date to before the cart was first installed, well it worked still, so this showed the cart keeps track of its install date somewhere but the last used date is always pulled from the PC even if it would be impossible without time travel :

So I went digging, these are not in any order and I can't remember what was going on, but the short answer was I found 3 different firmwares on my PC for printers in that family and found that when you turn the printer on, the firmware seems to get sent to it, I have some images somewhere showing the memory used in the printer was the same size as the firmware, it's also on the diag sheet it prints, I confirmed that by renaming the .bin and the printer refused to do anything just sat there flashing on power on, this also happens if you remove the little tray app thing it installs the printer won't work without it. The 1st time you turn the printer on there's around a 30 second delay where its flashing, something was being sent to it not a print, it was not warming up or doing anything, it does that before a print. I tried using those USB Sniffers all I found was whatever was going to it was large and did not match the sniffs I got when I was sending it test prints could that be firmware who knows, there's nothing in the actual printer  :

I found the chips on the toner were programmable and universal it seems, I found they they work in different printers depending on how you flash them :

I wondered what would happen if I took the chip out and got this, it was still able to print :

Here's how it was defeated in the end :

Yes a bit of tape
And that was that :)
To this day that cart is still printing, there's more to this when I find the photos. Including the epic toner blow out
Anyhow why did I bother well I figured that if you buy 10 of these carts you can get them for around £4 each each one would eventually run out, a 1kg bottle of toner refill was £13 and would get me 10/11 refills so I figured £13 vs £40

Random pic of the toner chip, i'm going to get some of these and work out how to get that blob off :

Update :

Another refill as it was fading again, this time we managed about 1500 ish pages on about 50g toner, I think its meant to have about 85g toner in it from what I remember, I really need a funnel badly

So this carts been refilled 2x so far and did more than orig spec on its orig refill. I think this shows how long these things can last then.
This means we are now going past 7000 pages on this toner, will it make it to 10,000? who knows

If the orig. fill was about 85g and I got around 3500 pages (that was to the point of a almost blank page  ) and i'm only putting in around 50g and getting around 1500 pages, it seems about right.

I must be getting better there's less all over the place now and I never even got none on the drum this time!!!

Do I need to design a funnel and print one out for you :p. Though it would probably end up with a 68000 on the side doing something..-
