Today's Miraculous survivor. It works!

Post by PhilC » Thu May 02, 2019 8:46 pm

One of the four ST motherboards I got yesterday is a C103088 Rev 2.2. Nothing strange in that I hear you say.

So it's got 1024kb Ram on the board and looks great..... until you turn it upside down, then it's a complete mess with corrosion everywhere.

It looked that bad that I was about ready to strip the board for parts.

Me being me , thought stuff it, let's plug it in for a laugh. Well it only bloody works!! Only seeing 512k at the moment but hey, I'm impressed it works at all.

I had to clean away a huge blob of rust underneath , thinking nothing will be there but all traces still exist!.

Obviously not complaining and this board does need a lot of TLC to bring it back to life fully but... surprise surprise.

BTW, can anyone recommend me what to do to cover up the bare tracks after cleaning away all the surface rust? I intend to solder plate them but be nice to protect it further.

Maybe just clean it up, work out the bugs, tape it off and use matching pcb lacquer on it.

Dear friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I bring to you this sad news.

The previously mentioned C103088 rev 2.2 put up a noble fight but in the end, it was only the rust that held it together.

The motherboard passed away this afternoon, whilst endurung open CPU surgery.

It may be consolation to some that the motherboard did not suffer in the end. And that it carried a Donor card, so all is not lost, as thanks to its ultimate sacrifice, other Ataris may live on.

So, please join me in a minutes silence for our dearly departed friend....

Or something like that anyway.

Basically removed all the rust today and let's just say I'd be soldering for a week and probably still wouldn't have got it to run again.

In other News, I got my STF Remake out today, to find out that something has gone wrong with the memory side of things. It boots to Duag Rom and the Diag Cart through serial but doesn't detect any Ram at all.
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.
