Breadboard VGA card

Post by kludge » Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:35 pm

I'd rather be soldering DIN connectors all day than building that on breadboards :D

A kludge is a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain.

My lack of focus:
[ 3 * Amiga 500 ][ Amiga 500+ ][ Amiga 600HD ][ Amiga 2000 ][ Amiga 4000/030 w/ 64 MB RAM hack ][ CD32 (NTSC) ][ VIC-20 ][ 4 * C64 Breadbin ][ 2 * C64C ][ 2 * C128 ][ Mac Classic ][ Mac Classic II ][ Mac Colour Classic ]

Pretty hard core way of doing things :D
In this day and age I guess it would be easier to use any old microcontroller or other such gadget to emulate a VGA card, but where's the madness in that

I wonder how hard it would be to just straight up copy a old PCI VGA card, they never used to have many chips anyhow, I guess the core would be the issue, emulating it or recreating it somehow?

Yeah, the madnessness of that bread boarding is amazing. I would probably, as you said, have used a micro controller or maybe a CPLD. Not nearly as geeky.
