Re: Credit card vs Debit cards on new webstore poll

Thanks for the info.

IBAN seems to be how people in the EU want to roll, but its not really a viable option for me for many reasons. The amount of time I get asked about it drives me nuts. I'm going on what people constantly tell me, that they don't have a credit card because they are to expensive, I heard it countless times. May they all just being lazy then or just don't want to use credit cards  Can't please everyone I guess.

Though like I say, if I can accept some debit cards then more people should be happier. Though the new payment system is going to increase credit card transactions by about 2%. So others will be less happy. I could have given the choice for debit cards to be "fee free" and credit cards a 2% surcharges, but UK law doesn't allow me to do that now.

The only work around is to call it a "handling fee" that only credit card people pay, but likely I won't know what card people use until the transaction is done, at that point the order is already paid for. I mean I make loads of EU people happy by accepting debit cards (so they claim) but upset credit card people with higher fees. I haven't really got many options, they all seem bad ones.

The poll is a pointer.. I mean if I literally knew 50% credit, 50% debit, I would do what I do now basically and just average it all out over the year with fees. Basically 1% fee type of thing. If it was all debit, 0% fee, or all credit cards 2% fee. So the poll will help me decide if its worth even bothering with debit cards in the first place. I already signed up and using a second payment processor which only takes credit cards like Stripe.

Though if Sage take a long time to get back to me, or do not get back to me within a few days, I won't bother them anyway. I'm not dicking around with companies anymore. If my store is easy to change processors , then I may well keep changing until I find one which doesn't suck.

Pragmatically speaking, I don't think this poll will give you the answer as majority of your customers wont notice it at all.

I think the interesting question is "is the loss of all that credit card people bigger than loss of all the people who wont buy 2% more expensive stuff from me anymore". I would say it is.

Fully agree.

I didn't even bother to read this thread until just now because I thought I wouldn't care anyway - owning credit cards and assuming everybody wants to buy foreign would have one as well.

Regarding 2% general uplift: I would not care. Once Brexit really means Brexit eventually, nobody will talk about 2% anyway. At least as things look right now from over here.
And remember: Beethoven wrote his first symphony in C.

I'm not using the poll as a definitive choice mechenisum to if I will or will not take cards. Just as a general feel to what peoples views are.

As for brexit, prices in my store may go down a fair bit if I can buy stuff overseas without paying hefty import charges on everything.on some items it ends up costing me almost double the purchase price in taxes

If EU treat UK as we get treated for USA with fees, then EU customers to my store will end up paying import taxes. But if I don't have to pay import taxes, then the overall price to EU people will likely remain the same overall, just EU people will be paying the taxes, not me.

USA type customers who won't be paying taxes will get stuff a lot cheaper from my store. Of course nobody know what will happen. But people buying from EU from my store will end up with the same import taxes problem I have nown buyingn from China and USA etc.

This is all a over simplification and I'm not wanting to go into huge debates or speculation about it all either. But the bottom line is, if I can buy stuff cheaper, I will pass the savings into my store. If EU impose import taxes from UK items, then EU customers will get charged import taxes. In which case #leaveEU.

Credit card vs Debit cards on new webstore poll

Post by guus.assmann » Sun Aug 11, 2019 12:12 pm

After reading this, I think I should explain the iDeal system that seems to be popular in my country. (Netherlands)
If I place an order on a website, for payment I have to enter my bank name.
The order-site connects to my bank of choice with the request to pay the amount. This opens a seperate window, sent from my bank.
Then I have to log in to my account, the same way I need to do for on-line banking.
After logging in, I aprove the amount to be payed to the ordering website. I can see the name, amount and order description.
Once I approve, the same way as I would for on-line banking, the amount is payed.
Payment notice is then sent to the order-website.
This method ensures that the order-website doesn't get any of my data, other than what I had to enter for the purchase and shipment.
I'm not sure about any buyer protection with this method.

After-Pay is also a rising star over here. Not sure what guarantees this give for seller and buyer. Other than a buyer pays uppon reception of the goods and not before.

iDeal is a listed option in Sage. I never heard of it until a couple of days ago. Though I don't know about any charges for that system or not yet as still waiting for Sage to reply. It sounds more like a bank to bank transfer, but there are charges on my bank normally which is why I don't get involved..

Though while Stripe "appears" to all run on my site, it actually does all the payment stuff on stripes servers. No credit card info at all goes via my site or server. So on Sage there wouldn't any any pop up boxes or anything, it would just redirect to Sage and all the processing is just done on their site. After payment it returns back to my server where I process the order.

Its just basically like checkout on ebay which directs you to a paypal payment page then back to ebay kinda thing.

Saw this today :

https://privacy.com/

Lets you make virtual credit cards and load them up with funds for that 1 time use, has auto cancelling cards, cards locked to 1 service etc etc.
Says they make money off the interchange fees between merchants and no other charges, cant find nothing else on there site about that.

Seems to be US based might try it see if it works, might be a answer to some of the problems in this thread :)

Other options :

https://www.mycard2go.com/en/
https://www.payoneer.com/
https://spectrocard.com/
https://www.ecopayz.com/en/
https://money.yandex.ru/
https://www.b2bpay.co/virtual-credit-card
https://epayservices.com/en/virtual-cards.html
https://www.riyadbank.com/en/personal-b ... rtual-card

Some of the above make you get there prepaid physical card and then generate of that, most don't, there's prob a solution in there that fits whatever your trying to do.

I found out my card American Express Makes virtual cards up, that's wonderful because nowhere accepts the thing anyhow!

Not many votes, but looking like 50:50 really.

Currently my package has the same rate for debit or credit, but I may change it in the future if I get more debit payments than credit, as debit cards can be a bit cheaper for transaction costs.
