Nova GPU Case

Post by Icky »

Hats off to Atari Computing for creating this Nova graphics card case. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3638032

Have started printing it off today (half way through) to house my ATI MACH 64. Am going to adapt it to also include the USB PC back plane from the Lightning card.

Looks good to me :-)

I put mine inside an old Atari SF354 that didn't work. Makes it look like I have a floppy drive sitting on top.
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

After printing Atarian Computing's 3D files out and putting the GFX card in I started to realise that the design is quite chunky. I wanted to make it slimmer so I could lay it flat to fit under the side of my monitor.

I had a chat with Atarian Computing and we both concluded the original STL files are a PITA to modify so I thought I would do a mod of Atarian Computing's version. Think of drawing it from scratch I got a little carried away and its turned into a completely different design which is based on a few enclosures I have seen on the web.

Thus based on Atarian Computing's original idea I present the slim Nova eGPU. It also has a provision for an internal fan.

I have done some test prints but need to do some final adjustments before releasing to the public. The graphics card in the 3D pic is just a template to make sure if fits.

Looking good.

Just an observation. If the fan is too close to the inlet grill it will likely bypass the card unless the air is funnelled towards the card somehow. Presuming the fan is supplying air and not extracting.

I'd put the grill at the other end so air flows through the whole case.

Good point PhilC. I have only just knocked this up in the last day. I was thinking of a few printable options e.g. if using the fan then a print that closes off more of the side grill and only leaves a smaller grill at the other end. The full grill is more for a non-fan version. Could also put a grill on the other side as well. Many options :)

Have also been thinking of putting a PC Card plate on the opposite end where the fan is as an option to allow the Lightning USB ports if you have that as well to be placed in the case.

That's cool. Many options = many happy peoples.

Should stop typing whilst drinking beer.

Two versions of the housing. First one if you don't want to use a fan. The second is an adjustment to allow as you mentioned better air flow across the heatsink I have on my Mach64 chipset.

Spilling beer on your keyboard is not a good mix :)

Inside enclosure part printed. Its a bit scruffy as it was a quick print as I knew there would still be the need for a few more adjustments. However there is very little to do to finish this piece off.

Now I just need to print out the outside pieces and see how it all fits together.

First side panel printed and not happy with it. Firstly the mesh vents are very thin and some broke pulling off of the blue tape. I need to strengthen that area up. This print again was a quick on as I knew there would be things to change.

Good thing is the nut slots on the inside part line up with the outside, only need to increase the countersink slightly to make sure the screw heads are flush. My intended goal of getting a slimmer Nova eGPU case is almost there. Again thanks to AtarianComputing for the initial idea.
