Tech regrets

Post by DrF » Sun Aug 23, 2020 9:52 pm

Was thinking after looking at prices of stuff now what did you throw out when you couldn't get a £1 for it if you tried.

Amstrad CPC 6128 with monitor loads of other stuff, needed a drive belt that was it, could not give it away, had to move so it went in the bin, about 2005 that was.

About 100 to 150 IBM model M keyboards (local office clear out/upgrade complete with 486 SX25s  ), with 100's of spare leads and keycaps, could not sell them at all this was around the year 2002 had to put them in the bin shoot, the damage they caused from 14 floors up

2 x Sun UltraSparc 60s with the dual cpus fully loaded no interest at all, sat in my loft for years, struggled to move the things the weight alone

Trading in my Atari 800xl set up I'd spent probably 15 years building for a shiny new Megadrive. Luckily I kept my 65XE but I never built up the same collection again. Also selling my Mega ST and Casio CZ5000 setup. Sadly I needed the money, but it still hurts and though I have the Megas again, the Casio is a much harder nut to crack.
Collector of old Atari things:
800XL + Ultimate 1MB, 2x 1010 cassette, 1050 + Happy mod, 65XE (128k +APE Warp) & XC12, SIO2SD, 2600jr, 7800 and Lynx II
Atari 520ST (1Meg), 1040STF long button floppy, 2x 1040 STFMs + Gotek, 2x 4160STE with 32Mhz booster, ROM switcher, Mega ST1, Mega ST4, not to mention various bare ST boards for testing including a PAK 68/2 :)
Plus the rest..
Amiga stuff, Mac stuff, Sinclair stuff etc...

I got an STe to replace my crashy STFM 10 years ago. It didn't work so I chucked it.

I will always feel bad for doing that.

I sold my crashy one though to Atari Freakz so it wouldn't go to waste when I aquired my new Atari.

Since I volunteered learning how to fix bicycles my whole attitude has changed and I try to fix things.

If anyone knows where I can get one of these with the top fixed like this I can repair my heater:

Holy crap those model M's would have been worth 10-15,000 on today's market. Who would have thought back then that they would end up like gold dust.

Have 4 of those @exxos

The metal bracket needs to be flipped over and sealed so it can't move.

It fits inside this:

The ones I can buy have the metal bit upside down.

That's why it a huge regret, I still got other crap from back then sadly :(

It was all IBM stuff in that place and it looked old and dirty, it was some kind of data entry customer support/database they was being used in, from what I could tell because no one wiped the hard drives and there was spreadsheets of all kinds of info about the company and customers and this was no small company... it's the local water board

There was some kind of headless server running these things, I presume it was the daddy because it had 2 floppy drives and a load of hard drives.
The 486s had token ring network cards, useless at the time so in the bin.

The memory was removed from the PCs and used in STE 4mb upgrades, the 850mb hard drives ended up in various Amigas, some of the 486s got a new life as Coyote Linux firewall/routers, the PSUs went all over the place mostly arcade related, the monitors were dumped they was tiny and looked like something from the 70s.

The keyboards went, because at the time you could buy a keyboard, mouse, speaker set for like £5/6 delivered brand new in a box who would want these old things? some of them was really odd too, had extra function keys, weird layouts.

We was using the mass of keyboard leads as dreadlocks, prob get done for that these days

Other regrets :

Sold my 1040 STE with a accelerator & ram upgrade and 100s of disks for £60! around 2007/8 I think
Collection of about 20 jamma arcade boards, supergun, arcade sticks £150 :( desperate times

To be fair, alot of this stuff was STILL cheap to buy ~5 years ago:

Falcon030: ~£300
TT: ~£150-200
STe: ~£15-40
Amiga1200: ~£50

Prices seem to have got ridiculous over the last few years. Now:

Falcon030 ~£2k+ (!)
TT: ~£350-800
Ste: ~£100-250
Amiga1200:~£150-350

My guesstimate prices might be a bit off in places, but you get the idea.

My plan for making sure I dont get rid of anything I may regret: Dont sell...Hoard everything in the loft/shed!
