"On my website (https://www.chzsoft.de/site/hardware/us ... -atari-st/, sorry that page is in German only), I have 1.44(!) MB HFE-format floppy disk image (i.e. 80 tracks, 2 sides, 18 sectors) that I use with my unmodified ST and a Gotek with HxC firmware."

Maybe 18 sectors/track works, and 20 sectors/track not.
Here is image with 18 sectors/track (not much in) :
BOMBUZAL.ZIP
(347.38 KiB) Downloaded 17 times

I mailed Jeff, and he responded quickly:

"you can create 2.5MB DD images for ST without problem since many many
years :) . See the disk browser function into the hxc software :) (see p.j) "

Question: I guess that FW simply switches to HD mod (so double clock) when
image is with more than 11 sector/track.
Answer:
"No it don't. HFE is a flexible format so you can set the parameters and
the disk geometry you want, even format that can't exist on the real
floppies."

1,6 MB image worked not.
Answer:
"No problem. Just need to select the 2.5MB format specially customized
for this. 1.6MB is probably in HD mode, but you can force the bitrate in
the hxc software or on the emulator itself too. Then this is will work.
Simple question of setting ;)."

So, I guess that this is clarified. People, read manuals !

Sorry for the delay in getting back, I've been a bit busy. My Goteks are all FlashFloppy (Very latest version), and the HD36.ST image failed every time.

I tried it with 4 different machines, an 4160 STE, a 1040 STFM & a 520 STFM, and none would boot to that image or read it from the desktop.

What I may try and do is reflash one of the spare drives I have with HxC firmware to see if it makes a difference. I'll report back when I've had a chance to do it.

I may be mistaken as I bought a couple of these years ago and not really used them since, but arent there (at least) 2 different models?

Something like FRU920 for the DD version and FRU144 for the HD. I believe they have different Cortex IC's.

Hence Im not sure the DD one can cope with the higher storage formats.

Mine were all 1.44Mb capable Gotek drives, and not 720Kb only, so I don't think that will have an effect on my testing.
