Advice for UltraSatan, Satandisk users - PSU related

Post by Petari » Sun Jun 10, 2018 1:44 pm

Do not use smartphone chargers for UltraSatan, Satandisk. They have enough power for it, but voltage is too low. I received e-mails in past with complains about bad writings. And that's what happens when there is low voltage from PSU.

I never checked that voltage until today - I mean latest smartphone chargers, which are standardized in EU . They give only 5V . And it was because problems with my UltraSatan, so I thought about trying other PSU. But did not connect it at all, after checking voltage. UltraSatan needs (and I guess that is same with Satandisk) min some 8-9 V power supply, capable to give some 500mA without bigger voltage drop.

And funny thing is that just received e-mail from guy, who talked about bad writes with UltraSatan. I asked what PSU - and yes, it is smartphone charger :)

Users might be doing this because UltraSatan is advertised as "MicroUSB power connector (5V needed only) - mobile phone charger needed - NOT SUPPLIED" by Lotharek: https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=48

UltraSatan (Lotharek) and Satandisk do _not_ have the same voltage requirements.

Yes, I was thinking about it, but was not sure. Because Lotherek mentioned something like Pico PSU, for smartphones some years ago.
So, Lotherek UltraSatan has different voltage regulators. In classic UltraSatan, to call it so, there is Graetz bridge at start, what self drops some 1.2-1.5 V. Then 5 V regulator and others - that's why needs min some 8-9 V.
Well, we need to be more specific, accurate. I guess that power connector is different on Lotharek v. too .

I'm not sure all ultra satan are the same either ? I mean quoted 5V needed supply, but mine is original which has regulator and needs 9V or so.

I can confirm using , lets just say "cheap" PSU's, have bad regulation, and US not work great with these. During my DMA work I saw that, and heard others with similar PSU issues.

During my CF adapter work with Petari, I saw interface fail due to bad regulation for CF card. It works much better with 5V regulator on board and using 9V PSU (preferably regulated). If US uses 5V PSU now, I think would be bad move to remove regulator..

Lotharek current UltraSatan has different design - slots are not one under other, but side by side .

I did not use any regulator with ACSI-CF adapter - just took 5V from Atari self. And that worked well with ST 1040, Mega ST (not so good with it's IMP DMA chip), STE and Mega STE + TT . Of course, now machines are older, so if PSU is not recapped, fixed it may be not good enough for sensitive adapter.

I remember you had much less issues with CF adapter than me. I think I only got read working after adding regulator on PCB. Just goes to show how 2 more-or-less identical machines can act so differently with faults.
